I think a Katana would pull a gear up kit.

They are geared really low, my one kills most 70cc's to about 20-25mph.

    I dunno, the minor problem i have is this;
I have two Katanas, one air cooled one liquid cooled.
The liquid cooled is completely standard apart from the leo vince exhaust with 5gr rollers and the standard carb jetted to 78 with a sports filter on it (for now). It will now do a steady 36 on the flat, but on a slight downhill, if it gets towards or over 40 the engine sounds like it is screaming for mercy. A lot more than other scooters i have had and done before now.
The air cooled is standard apart from the leo and 5gr rollers as well.
Apparently, and i say this according to the previous owner as i haven't had a chance to try it yet, the air cooled was doing 45 on the flat, 50+ downhill, and a steady 35 uphill.
The only thing i can think of is that the gearing ratio of the later models is different, so when i get a chance i am going to open up both gearboxes at the same time and compare and count the teeth on each set up. Then i shall try the later gearbox in the earlier model and see what happens. If, and i say IF, i find that there is a difference, i shall make the relevant changes.
I have already compared the variator/clutch/carb setups and they are exactly the same on both bikes, so my only conclusion is the gearbox ratios differ in some way.
We shall see in due course.

or the bike is naked, and in need of some work. i have a NRG power that would only do 35 and it would die down hill at faster speed. i have it a new cylinder and a full service and it did 55 on clocks. so 49 ish.

all am saying is your looking too fair into it. it will be somthing silly. do you know the rollers are right? if it screaming. is the jetting right? crank seals making it over heat and lose power? belt too bigor too small or need running in. is it like the yamaha bike with a shit small stock veriator and rear pully.

Probably on all counts, but if one bike is doing 45ish and the other 36ish, and they have the same parts fitted on each bike, then the only conclusion is the gearbox ratios.
As I said, we'll see in due course.

Won't be this weekend as I am putting the zzr1100 back together, hopefully will be done tomorrow night (sunday), then I will take a peek at the katanas. I've got a couple of weeks before the new lower panels should arrive, so hopefully I should have the solution by then. And then it's up for sale.
Or I could just leave it and let somebody else do the work.

they have the same ratio... one as a sports pipe one dont and sports filter.

just for the record you know a sports filter needs a 20% jet up. and the pipe need a 7% jet up 78 dose not sould like a big jump. a sports filter needs a bigger upjet then a 70cc kit

    I have.
He has said he is going to take the gears apart to check because he does not know himself.

Sometimes no advice is better than bad advice.

Been out and about on it today, goes quite nicely, although it could do with a bit more ummph!
Nice and steady 36mph on the flats, I think i'm getting used to the way it sounds when it gets to 40, but I still ain't that sure. Or that happy. I will quite happily sell it on as it is, it's just my own way of doing things that is holding me back. Well, that and waiting for the new lower panels to arrive.
The other katana, the air cooled one is now on the ramp awaiting my attention. Probably start on it tomorrow night. We shall see

Hallelujah!:D CMS have finally dispatched the new parts i ordered for the scoot; the new lower panels will arrive via ups..................so they say.
Will post a new pic when i have them here and fitted. Will then be a complete little bike again. Belly pans and all; which are normally missing on these for some reason.
Then its going on THAT well known auction site.
Any ideas as to what price i should be asking for it chaps? be realistic please. I was thinking around the £495 mark?

look at the bike and ask your self some simple questions.
dose it look clean + panels all in good condition.
    how old is it.
    dose it run well.
    is it a popular bike.

i think £500 sounds right but we are yet to see it.

does it look clean + panels all in good condition - lets see some detailed photos.
how old is it - 1998.... WOW 15 years.
dose it run well - NO you been asking for help for weeks if i went for a bike and it was screaming at 30mph i would be worried.
is it a popular bike - i never see one before so...

As soon as lower panels are on I shall post new pics for your assessment.
    Yes 15 years old.
Yes it now does run well. And it doesn't scream at 30mph, I feel it screams at 40mph+. But that is my opinion. Other people may think differently.
The speed problem I had has now been resolved; I am quite happy with its current 36/37mph. If the next owner wishes to do something about it, it is up to them.
And i can't believe you have never seen a Suzuki Katana R before.

I hate how some people on this site can be right pessimistic bastards!

I know exactly what your talking about, I own a Suzuki AY50 K3.
The gear ratio is low, simple. :)

I for one love my Suzuki and would trust it to get me anywhere as long as I feed it.

    Post some pictures! :)
I'll show you some of mine if you like ;)
