Today, I finished off the paint job on the transmission case. Two coats of U-Pol #8 Acid etch primer, two coats of matt black and three coats of lacquer. I went for black after all but with a gloss finish, instead of satin black.

It looks lush, doesn't it? No sign of any damage anywhere. :D

My next mission is to get the crankcases done to the same standard in silver aluminium finish and lacquer.

Just made 3 customers baulk at the same time, never seen so many eyes pop and jaws drop at once.:D
Gave them the prices for rebuilding their engines.
One is a runner injection, oil pump belts gone, obvious damage caused.
The other is an nrg with the oil pump belt gone, obvious damage caused, plus the big end has gone on the crank.
The last one is an nrg with a malossi mhr top end, replica i think, head studs on the outside, crank gone big style, compression at 30psi. He's only had it a week, was nearly crying.
Either i'm going to be busy, or not.

My name's Dave, by the way. :)

That case is proof that any paint job is 90% preparation. If I hadn't taken the time to repair all of the dings, cracks and scratches in that case with epoxy putty, then it would have looked as rough as a bear's arse, as black paint is probably the worst colour of all for showing up flaws in any paint job.

Take your time, apply lots of light coats of paint and let the results come to you. If you try to rush the job, the end results will reflect that.

Compare that photo with the original pictures I took of the damage to the case and it's quite a dramatic difference. It's all as smooth as a baby's bum now. I've fitted a fold-out kick start lever to the case, instead of the standard Peugeot one, so that my foot will stay clear of the case when I have to kick start the bike and hopefully prevent any further damage from happening.

The Acid Etch #8 primer should stick like the proverbial to the case and there's enough coats of paint and lacquer to last for years on there.

I can feel progress being made now.

I've painted the engine cases this evening with U-Pol #8 primer and I've just ordered the axle bearing and oil seals for the final drive gearbox. Now, what's going to look better as the finish on the engine cases, bright aluminium or a darker gun metal type of finish? I'm undecided.

Once these cases have completed painting, I can start to re-assemble the engine by installing the new crank bearings, crank seals and refit the gearbox. Then I can refit the crankshaft, assemble the cases together then install the engine mount and main stand, the air pump, cylinder, piston and cylinder head then it's on to the starter motor, variator, belt, clutch and transmission cover. After that, it's the stator, magneto rotor, air cooling fan and the cooling ductwork.

Then I need to remove some blistered and lifted paint from the rear wheel, prepare it for primer and a re-paint in gloss white as per factory standard, then I can re-assemble the rear brakes and rear wheel and end up with a free standing unit.

The last lap will be to fit the reed block, carburettor and air box assembly and it should be just about ready to go back onto the bike.

Changed my rollers and drivebelt. may need a new variator soon.
Installed a 12v socket and a bracket/case for my phone to go into.
Changed my tyres for continentals and gave her a wash.

I don't think that Peugeot used any primer at all when they manufactured the wheels for my scooter. The paint is absolutely shite and is coming off in pieces an inch wide with almost no effort, there's no adhesion whatsoever in places.

There bloody well will be when I've taken it all back to bare metal and given it a couple of coats of acid etch primer.

The toughest paint I ever saw was on my Aprillia 5 spoke wheels (on my scoot). It took a week of constant application of the toughest damned stripper commercially available to get the paint off 'em. The MBK wheels were done in 5 minutes with the same product.......
By the way - I think I speak for us all when I say - we want full photo coverage of the engine re-build !

    @ Turbo

OK, I'll start taking a lot more photos, starting with the state of the wheels, before I really start cutting loose on them. I have two sets of wheels, the original white set and a spare set I bought in black and my plan is to refinish the black set in white and fit new road tyres, then move on to the other set of wheels and have some with a chunkier tread on them for when I decide to go off-road. The current front tyre on the white set is a knobbly tread so I just need a rear off-road tyre for that set.

As I said earlier, the engine cases are in primer and I need to decide on the top coat colour before I take them any further.

I also need to fabricate some Leo Vince lookalike mounts for the Technigas pipe. The pipe didn't have any when my son bought it and I knocked up a quick sheet steel plate mount for it; now I need to make some nicer looking steel brackets. I have some 5mm steel plate that might do the trick, although it's more than bit of overkill.

When I have all of the engine parts ready for re-assembly, I'll lay them all out before I put it all together.

Next time you're on one of these benders, can you buy me one please? :D

I had a bit of a result today. I was walking around the site where I work and I glanced into the metal scrap bin outside the engineering workshop, as I sometimes scrounge metal scrap for projects. Somebody had thrown something away as scrap, but now it's all MINE, I tell you, MINE...

Does it look familiar? It should, it's a Paoli shock absorber for a Peugeot TKR 2 or Speedfight 1 / 2!! It was well oily and manky when I found it, but it's scrubbed up quite well and it's in a lot better condition than the one that's currently on my bike - nice!!. What are the odds of that happening?
