First principles. Remove carb, clean and blast with compressed air. Drain petrol tank, put new in. Replace all fuel/ air pipes. Make sure the depression stop cock/ pump/ whatever you want to call it is letting fuel go when you cycle the air hose with your mouth. Check spark. Replace plug even if you see a spark. Check Ht lead. Try a new coil. Try borrowing a new / working cdi. Basically start from scratch eliminating the fuel supply/ carb, then go to work on the ignition. It has to be one of the two.
If not, remove the cylinder and check for actual mechanical problems. The noise you heard may be a clue.
Only one way to find out. Dirty hands- or professional help. Proceed with the easiest culprets first. Fuel supply. Then the mechanics(cylinder off) and then electrics. I wish you good luck.

Reading this leads me to two things. Either you have got water onto the piston and it's popped, hence the lack of compression drawing fuel to the piston, aka, a dry plug however much you kick/crank it, or, the float is sticking in the closed position in the bowl, therefore not letting enough fuel into the cylinder. But you say that the carb is filling?

what do you mean by, popped? Yes, there is fuel getting in the carb, if i crank it over while blocking the carb intake side with my hand, it overflows

'popped' = blown a ring, thereby losing enough compression for it not to drag fuel to the cylinder.
Had this scenario with a sym jet euro x 50. The kid jet washed it all over, got just enough water into the intake for it to get sucked onto the piston. You can't compress water like you can petrol, and on a 2 stroke it kills the piston and bore.

If you want to rule out an exhaust blockage, just undo it at the manifold and let it hang then try and start it. If it starts, then there is your problem. If it doesn't, for the time it takes to check, whip the cylinder off.

surely if there was water in there it would have had trouble starting or would have died quicker? exhaust can't be blocked it's only been on 500 miles

Not necessarily, you could have had water sitting in the carb to air box rubber, and then when you open the throttle, the sucking from the carb gets great enough to shift it from there to the piston. It will pass straight through the carb body, through the reeds, and onto the piston.
As for the exhaust, newness and mileage doesn't count. You can't tell from the outside if something has collapsed on the inside causing a blockage.
It's all pie in the sky at the moment as until you find the problem we'll never know.
But from experience, if there is fuel at the carb, and the reed petals are intact with no pieces missing off them, (i have known a corner break off one petal and cause the same symptoms), and the plug is sparking, then the next port of call for me is the piston.

Picked up a new customer today, came to me on a recommendation from somebodies mother of all people, feeling very pleased with myself:D

Gonna start to rub the panels down on the zip tomorrow. I'll create a new thread for everyone.

The replacement speedo cable for one of the vx's turned out to be too short, by 12.5cm. Have to wait now til next week for the replacement.

Lots of dremelling this evening. Starting to come together. Looks quite good when I put the gasket on to see the profile. Photos soon. But lots (and I mean lots) of work to do yet. But I really enjoy this part!

intended as a compliment on the condition of the machine. And a subtle rant at MOTs.....

    hi,
required, new rear disc, rear suspension and stearing bearings to pass.
one small bad point, the front disc now needs replacing at some point.
