scoot is acting up today, whenever i slow down, it sounds like it's about to die if i don't rev it, i havent touched the idle, and i've put the mixture screw 1 and 1/2 turns out. After i slow down it struggles to go anywhere, what could it be? Rollers are fine, got all 4.5's in now

decided to go visit the wall roman site. saw 60mph on the clocks on the A5 with head down, legs tucked in and everything. just sat in a small car park for a while let it cool down and i went off to visit the site.

More Varadero stuff today for my son, as he is tired of bump-starting it and the 'electric foot' had stopped working (there's no kickstart on the Varadero). All in all it was about five and a half hours of grief and swearing.

I had to drain the oil and coolant, strip off the clutch cover, then spend ages trying to persuade a corroded-in starter motor to part company with the gearbox. Then I had to break out the Dremel, to cut down the side of and split the nut that held on the live wire, as it was rusted on tight and wouldn't move.

I stripped the starter motor and poured out the black powdery remains of one of the carbon brushes, then cleaned the copper armature of the motor spindle, fitted the new brush carrier and brushes, greased the bearings of the motor, found some replacement fibre insulation washers from my spares tin that needed a little 'fettling' to fit over the new terminal thread and finally tested it on my spare scooter battery - success!

Then it was on to breaking out the silicone instant gasket, to repair the clutch cover gasket (where it had torn during disassembly) and for the water pump cover, along with replacing a split 'O' ring on the coolant union to the engine block from the radiator. He was lucky that I just happened to have one that fitted amongst my hoard of spares that 'just might come in handy one day'.

We replaced the oil and coolant, then I asked him to try it on the starter, only to hear the 'clattering' of the solenoid and watch the display on his dash fade out, because he had his old tired battery fitted to the bike - doh!

I sent him on his way, telling him to watch his temperature gauge carefully on his way home and to refit his new battery as soon as possible.

Thanks! I messaged him today and asked him now the bike was and he complained that it was cutting out, but he hasn't changed the batteries over as I told him to, so I can understand why it's not running right as they battery is just about dead. I guess that he'll do it later.

Once he gets his new battery installed, I reckon it will start on the button.

Putting the starter motor right behind the front wheel, in front of the engine was a stroke of genius on Honda's part... not.

Better the starter motor than the radiator and fan like on my VT! Honda design department, 'where is the best place for the rad', 'hmmmm we didn't think about that'... ... 'I know put the rad and fan right behind the front wheel where all the road crud will collect'... ... hmmmm good thinking Honda! Must have been the same team worked on the Varadero!

What have I've done to son's ped today? Nothing at all! Other than having a very enjoyable ride out following it! He did some town riding this morning, out again this afternoon for a country run if the rain holds off. He's already using the top box too!
