So, the new plug is running brown, that sounds OK to me. What symptoms have you got not when you try to start and ride the bike?

At the moment I can just kick it an endless number of times and it just won't start at all

If you take the plug out after kicking it, does it smell of petrol? Are you still getting a strong spark at the plug? If you temporarily remove the aif filter from the airbox and put your hand over the air intake, are you getting a strong 'pull' when the engine is on the intake stroke?

I'm starting to wonder if the crankshaft seals have had it, as these can rob the engine of fuel-air mix and prevent an engine from running. How old is the bike?

Does your engine have a vertical or horizontal cylinder? Older bikes all have the vertical cylinder and they are all interchangeable. It seems a bit of a drastic action to take though as your engine number will change, you'll need to notify DVLA and send them your V5 with the new engine number. It's quite a big job you'll be undertaking and you'll need some help to lift the frame from the engine. You can remove the frame and leave the engine standing on the back wheel and main stand.

Bike has a vertical cylinder, I know it's a bit drastic but it saves me spending time and money diagnosing problems. This engine didn't cost me a penny!! Only reason I had my doubts is because this engine has a mechanical oil pump mounted whereas my one has an electronic oil pump. Won't be using either as I'm premixing it's just threw me and wasn't sure if the engine would fit!!
