Sooooo, That didn't take long before i noticed something fishy was happening, the variator seemed to wobble when i turned her over by the electric starter. (no plug in). I thought it was misaligned on the crank shaft so poped it off only to find the shaft has the same wobble in it. I can kinda rattle it if i grip it with me hand. So I reckon I need to go about fitting a new crank in here now, I've already been eyeing up this BGM Pro one since I don't think there's any point in going through all the bother and installing a standard one again, https://www.scooter-center.com/scow...KI_KATANA50LC99&category2=CAT:CAT_KURBELWELLE Reckon its a good crank? will it come with the crank case gaskets or are they separate? and finally, do ya think the sound I described in the previous post fits with a possible dodgey crank? I'm thinking its down to the crank bearing races that are making the noise, since there doesnt seem to be any friction when i turned her over by hand before fitting the new cylinder.
providing it has an oring seal and the compression isnt much higher than the polini head then yes use the original... if you have machined the original why not just machine the polini head back? once machined to give a little more compression the heads can work REALLY well wiht a raise in timings... polini heads are usually spot on tho, you will find the plug is longer as the kitana head is shallow/not verry tichk hence it will cook itself on the higher cc kit most probably. not sure off the top of my head what plug is best to use altho any polini kit ive ever bought came wiht full instructions wiht the plug info included
Thanks, I ended up machining the Polini head anyway, I wasn't gonna bother as it meant more running around for me before i could assemble the kit. i was surprised at the amount of crap they leave on them, but its lovely and smooth now.
So i went ahead and ordered this, https://www.scooter-center.com/scow...KI_KATANA50LC99&category2=CAT:CAT_KURBELWELLE This https://www.scooter-center.com/scow...KI_KATANA50LC99&category2=CAT:CAT_KURBELWELLE And this, https://www.scooter-center.com/scow...KI_KATANA50LC99&category2=CAT:CAT_ERSATZTEILE With a little luck it'll arrive before the weekend and i'll get started on rebuilding the lot. I think the only thing left to sort after this now is the carb, the original is knackered so i might as well upgrade, Any recommendations considering the upgrades I've installed? (all standard bar the crank and 70 kit). i'd be delighted with some feedback on jet size for it too if possible.
Well my order arrived, that shop is cool, it takes longer for me to get things in my own country. So this weekend i'll be getting knee deep in this thing, hoping the crank is the right one, but im confident, (lol, kinda) So with this out of the way im looking at replacing the carb, anyone care to offer some advice/recommendation on what to go with? i wont been super duper but im running the above crank, 70 kit, and future mods probably the Yasuni Z exhaust (and a new variator) Might throw a polini/malossi variator on the order while im at it here if im getting the carb.
Man, you'd think i was asking for a kidney instead of looking for some recommendations in here. Well i got to the bottom of the issue with the bike, it turned out as i expected, the bearing race was breaking down and the crank shaft was slightly bent. that left the crank to rub off the outer bearing shell and cause the friction noise. twas all bluey/irridium colour around the area too so it must have been getting really hot. there was also a few bits of shrapnel mashed into the crank and the case was leaking from underneath. I replaced the bearings and the crank with BGM jobbies and its a million times better. So now i'll have to run her in but im still in the market for a new carb if anyone has any recommendations, its running pretty sweet at the moment but the original carb isn't in great nick so want rid of it. Here's a quick posey photo of her from this evening after the rebuild, the flat finish black was looking its age so it got a retouch and some Gixer SRAD decals, with the GSXR bit cut off, leaving just the R, (like the old Katana-R decal, but better looking) Gonna install a remote start alarm tomorrow and get ordering the new variator, smoked lenses (it has a tacky as sh1t blue one on hte back) and maybe repaint the wheels white again anyway, thanks to the lads that offered their experience, much appreciated.
