I'm sorry Gaz but the above is all the ideas I can think of. And if it is the clutch springs - I want them ! No Joke ! Name your price.

It's just occurred to me that you could have the engine running - bike on the center stand - transmission cover off - and then rev the engine & apply the brake. Then you could actually see what is slipping -
    Just a thought.

Only if you don't have an electric start & need the kick to start it.
Apply brakes & accelerator at the same time & see if the variator 'bites' & moves the belt up - and see if the clutch refuses to bite on the bell & lay the power down - or vice versa.
Let us know ! Video ?

hi me again, right we think we have found the problem we messed about with scooter today had the cover off when the bike was running and on the stand, the transmission all worked but when we put weight on it it just didn't want to know, So we checked the compression as we thought there might not be enough power and we are only getting 90 now. Is this enough compression?

    Hi Gaz
when you got it - did you rebuild the pston/cylinder ?
I always have it all off to see what's going on. The other reason I do this is because everyone thinks that paper gaskets/ rubber 'O rings etc are sufficient on their own. This is not true. I always use red CAFF sealant - on the head gasket (or even without a gasket - as I just did on the Piaggio Typhoon) - on the bottom cylinder gasket(s), on the admission stack/pipe etc etc.

It's possible that the lack of compression could be because the head is leaking - of that the rings are tired -

Have it off & use some sealant ! A do a ring gap test -

I don't bother measuring compression - only rings and squitch. And If in doubt - replace the rings.

right'o I will do that. Can you tell me if 90 compression would cause the problems we are having. When I put the cylinder back on I used hylomar blue on the all the gaskets and on the crank case so maybe the rings are a bit tired. I used the torque settings in the haynes manuel and checked the head bolts today all good

I honestly don't know. Never done a compression test. Mark E T would know. But it seems very odd that it would scream & not go like that. Even with tired rings. My money is on the transmission. Is there grease on the belt or something ?

Hi. It runs brilliant whilst on the stand but as soon as we take it off the stand and try it with load on the back wheel the engine doesn't give the power it should. The belt is virtually brand new and we have even tried swapping it with a known good belt.

Most bizarre. Can you post a pic of the tranny ? Together and apart would be ideal.

I had this exact same problem on the exact same scooter. Changed feckin everything; piston and barrel, all new gaskets, exhaust on, exhaust off, different carb, bigger jets, smaller jets, fuel vacuum, the bleedin' lot.............and still didn't find out what it was.
The only thing i didn't try was a slightly smaller length of belt.
This isn't a blue 03 plate scoot is it?

Hi and thanks for your input. We fitted new waterpump new main bearings and new seals all from AJ.Sutton. So we are now changing the piston and rings. Cheers Gaz

Hi not going to the scooter now until the new piston and rings arrive. As you can imagine this is so frustrating and thank you again for all your help. I will let you know what happens when we fit the new piston and rings. Cheers Gaz

Have a go at the ports with a Dremel if you can. I'm going to post something about this because it really is a major issue - and it takes five minutes. And have a go on the skirt with some emery paper and round it off - especially on the sides of the skirt under the connecting pin holes - (which are like bacon slicers - and stop the oil getting up between the piston & the cylinder wall. Again - takes five minutes.
What kit did you go for ?
