Hi All My first post I recently bought an aprilia sr 180 for nostalgia (had an sr 50 yonks ago) Stripped her down and it's got a dellorto 20.5 pvhb carb with a 85 jet Everything else seems to be standard , it's only doing 60mph , thinking it should be doing alot more Any advice or info welcome
i was watching a few sr 180 youtube vids and noticed most were running upgraded exhaust systems. maybe the motors getting held back bythe stock pipe setup ? a sr180 owner would be able to offer more help, but i would look into the stock pipe see if thats holding you back some what. i doubt a large bore scoot motor would be restricted in any way but the pipe itself ( emissions wise via a cat converter) and welcome to the scootershack 83sr
Eeeek will have to investigate more when I get back home marsh , I've literally just bought her had a play then had to go back to work . Only thing I can say it's registered on the tax book as a 180cc , that's not to say it's been put back to stock :-/ Thanks for your reply
An easy way to check if it's a 172cc is to see if the spark plug is straight, a 125cc will be inline with the barrel/head. On the Malossi barrel the plug faces up a few degrees, not 90 degree to the head cowling plus it would need at least a 90 main jet and do 70mph easy on the std gearing and rev it's lungs out! And the big give away is MALOSSI cast on the side of the barrel!
you could have a million bhp, it would still only ever do 62mph on the rev limiter, unless you have slightly bigger rollers/respaced variator, bigger variator, more tyre circumfrance or more commonly a gear swap. 10 ton press and a skilled pair of hands needed to install one,. or a 50 ton press and any ol mechanic can fit one. im not sure if maxiscoots have pre pressed gear kits yet, 50's do so just bolt em in and your laughing. what size wheel and tyre do you have, just out of curiosity? could have a small tyre on, that kills top speed. clock speed and true speed are NOT the same with these lol you PROBABLY have worn rollers, that will kill top speed, should see 70 ish on the clocks and more downhill (overrun lets the engine rev higher, but its not fully sparking so its wastefull/will soak out your exhaust with fuel/kill main bearings/gear bearings
i wondered if the prilly sr 180 is running the 125cc rear box, if so there is a gear up kit for the prilly sr 125cc https://www.beedspeed.com/gear-malossi-secondary-125cc-aprilliagilerapiaggi-p-3523.html
Thank for your reply , Ill check the tyre size and report back. How you go about de restricting the rev limiter? It def feels like its stoppong short on the revs. I have a rev counter i can test max rpm with at home , any idea what i should be expecting? Cheers
The dellorto 20.5 carb was a standard fitting on the 125's. The will work on the 180's, but a 28mm will be better. Plus change the standard pipe for a decent aftermarket one. better vario as well. Then good tyres and brake pads
