Aprilia sr 125 Kick start mech problem

hi i recently replaced both my kick start cogs as the teeth where worn,
does anyone no why now when i have put it back onto the bike the small cog doesn't seem to engage onto the var washer to turn the bike over, can see the cog moving correctly but wont engage, i have taken both cogs out and both look identical to the broken ones, the half moon cog is from a gilera runner 125 but looks the same, am i missing a washer spacer somewhere ??
i havnt played with the var side at all so that should be fine.
