i would check for any breaks in the wiring, maybe your getting a dodgy spark hence the backfiring and smoke obviously check the plug and ht lead...

not sure mate my nrg was air cooled i would take off the return hose that goes back to the rad, cause its higher you wont loose all the coolant...
i would check the water pump, pull of a pipe when its running see if its pumping water check all the hoses are getting warm, if some are cold then...
