Your limited to what exhaust you can fit due to bodywork, the std exhaust works 100%. Just de-restricted they work fine with the std carb.
If it need's a new exhaust then fit a new one, if the old carb work's , why do you want to change it?

Having removed variator spacer, chopped exhaust, i have always removed this plate, re-jetted to 58 main jet and they run perfect with no other mods.
Check the valve clearance, .003/.004 inlet and .004 to .005 exhaust.

Bounce on the back end, if there's no damping effect and just spring's back up quickly then replace it.
Have you checked the woodruff key/flywheel on the crank? If it was back firing then ignition timing could be out.

Or remove union and fill with resin? If you do it this way then it's hard to revert back to std.
