Check that the auto choke is working correctly, it may be sticking open (on).
Never use a torque/rattle gun to tighten variator/flywheel nuts, if you aint got the right kit, you can't do the right job!
You really need to take the variator off to check that the rollers hav'nt fallen out of place!
Are you trying to fit the belt with the variator/clutch all in place?
Try giving the carb a good clean and check the vacuum tap on the petrol tank, any air leaks on pipework?
