You need to slack the cable off because when it's adjusted up it takes some off the slave cylinder movement and doesn't return fully.

Open it up, look where the carb/oil pump cables run, you'll need to slacken off carb/pump cables to make it easier then reassemble.
It won't fit without modifying it, It will hit the fan cowling.

Yes, good call on the clutch, strip it down ,clean and lube all the pivots. Could be rollers on there way out and or variator worn?

You'll have to look deeper, it now sound's electrical, plug? water in the cdi/coil, loose terminals? side stand switch if fitted?
Drop the brake caliper off , undo the pinch bolt in the r/h leg, remove spindle. Make sure all spacers go back and re-assemble when done.
It could be the silent block and or engine mount bushes worn out.
