A yamaha dealer may help? Variator spacer ? I don't think that scooter was very popular in the uk.
Check by feeling if steering is tight or slack, headrace bearings warn ? Is the frame twisted so wheels not in line ?
Start with A big main jet, check spark plug colour to see how it's running. adjust mixture screw to what it needs while ticking over.
Is it loose or tight ?
As you say, impossible to find nowdays, could you use a car silent block ? I have a Piaggio skipper that uses a small block and when that fails...

What carb ? is choke working ? what cc ?
The area 51 is ancient and very rare in scooter terms, put a picture up of the silent block that you need.
fitting a new crank won't make it rev up, you have a fault on carb somewhere.
Ebay, you'll get what people think it's worth.
The choke is a/c powered when engine is running, feel how warm it is after 10 mins running.
Best get it to a mechanic if your not sure on what your doing.

I can't remember the last time i took it out ! If I remember right it's about 1-1/2" square plastic flat filter and yes just give it a wipe over.
And I think the oil filter is in the r/h engine case, a flat gauze type filter ?
I use a vox engine in one of my scooters, 10w-40 oil, and yes it's a c50 copy so a lot of info can be found in the Haynes manual. as for an oil...
A 2 stroke 125cc is a black cast iron barrel, a 180cc will have GILADONI cast on the side, a 172cc has malossi on side.

The cam chain should be a little slack before tensioner is fitted, take cap off tensioner and wind tensioner up, hold screwdriver in to keep it...
