Yeah washing up liquid or if you haven't got any good old fashioned soap works wonders as a degreaser.

You need to check the stator, to see if that's the reason your rev limiter isn't working. I had lots of backfiring issues with my speedfight but...
You can quite easily check the stator with a multimeter if you have one. I got mine from ebay £7.99 Bargain.
The popping is unburnt fuel burning in the pipe, hence the backfiring. Makes me wonder if it's running too rich...

Honestly it's the rain. Mine was exactly the same when wet. You need to stop water ingress somehow.
