I have the same set up with no issue, Is the head gasket okay? Is the cooling system boiling over?
It's an easy DIY job, so a mechanic should do it in no time.
I've got a similar set up and it's proved reliable, strong and with good performance. All in all It's a well matched setup

Variator first, then gear up & carb though a 17.5 or 19 is probably better suited.
The Topracing crank is actually quite good, it's a Doppler crank with a special finish which improves the fuel/air delivery.

Gearing does not run out at 59mph. When the variator is fully open the gearing becomes fixed, the maximum speed is then limited by the engine...

Why does it 'run out of gearing at 59 mph' ? It runs out of speed when the revs can go no higher which is dependent upon the power available.
