Piston in the right way round?

Top end lost compression?
Was it a sports exhaust previously? If so then you'll have to down jet it as its running too rich.
Could be heat seizing?
Check your idle screw isn't wound all the way in or your throttle cable could be slightly too short or routed wrong.
Probably should have read all the posts before replying. But yeah. It does work sometimes.

Fairly easy, just take your time. There will be lots of guides on the Internet on how to check them, you will need a set of feeler gauges though.
And check your valve clearances.
If you maintain them well there is no reason for it to be less reliable than any other bike. Try and find one with genuine low mileage if that's...
If it were me I'd change the barrel too, while your there you may as well. Especially if its got scores.
I'd never cheap out on tyres! Always use good well known brands, worth paying the extra money.
