Hey guys, me and a few mates have all been talking about this today & thought I'd come on here for some input from the guys who really know.

I'm basically going to be back in work soon & it's going to be a 20 - 25 mile round trip a day & I've been dabbling with the idea of selling my Zip & getting a 125 for the commute. I love the Zip to bits & it's being resprayed at the minute & in my heart of hearts I don't really want to sell it, much rather raise the money & 70 it & buy some more after market bits for it.

Will it be killing the Zip though sitting with revs on top end as I've been told that the little Air Cooled engines have been known to go bang.

I sound a right cheap fucker but it's cheap to run, it's cheap to insure & the most fun thing I've ever rode apart from a big bike. Just wondering what input you guys have on this as it'll help me make my final decision, cheers guys. :good:

A 70 can be as reliable as you want as long as its maintained, Top 2 stroke oil,Ran in Piston,Change rings now and again wont break the bank. I do a 30 mile round trip a day on my standard 50cc and thats at 45mph all the way and it takes it no problem starts first kick and its a 9 year old Scoot.

What 70 kits are you looking at?

Do it properly the first time with quality bits etc and there's no reason why it won't be reliable

A Malossi or Polini sport 70kit (cast iron), is as reliable as the standard parts. It should handle the daily commute no problem, I wouldnt ride it flat out constantly but it'll be happy in the high revs, its not designed to be pussy footed around.

Whoever told you that Aircooled engines are prone to go bang is chatting absolute shite. They dont build these engines to blow up, a standard aircooled 50 will run FLAT OUT constantly untill it runs out of fuel. Its a tried and tested road engine.

From my own experiences, Ive ran a zip cat 50 from london to brighton and back twice, flat out the entire way only stopping for fuel, and I had no overheating problems what so ever. And thats a total of 240miles, atleast 220miles were absolutley flat out.

Hi guys, thanks a lot for the responses it's greatly appreciated!

I've been looking at the Polini kit - what other parts would you guys recommend?

Been looking for a gear up kit, variator & thought maybe about a clutch but how many of these do you think would be necessary? Been looking at donotlink Pedstop & they don't seem to have a great deal in stock at the minute!

    Cheers, Matt.

yeah i would get a gear up kit as i have read that there good for going at speed in a straight line, variater and clutch would be good also i would recommend a new crank thats if you wanted to i think it would be better not a stock 1 tho get a full circle crank

Hi mate, yeah I thought about a new crank but to be honest I thought that the standard would be sufficient for the time being. I know the scooter's going to be tuned but at the minute it won't be putting out over 10 BHP & I think that the standard crank wouldn't have great trouble in handling that.

I'm only really trying to get the necessities at the minute. :)

I would only buy second hand if I was putting the part onto a project scooter.

If you're going for a cast iron kit they're so cheap new at under £100 I don't think It'd really be worth taking the risk.

I'd say go new where possible. :good:

Yes never buy second hand engine parts unless you know the person selling and have seen his bike running with the parts hes selling. Cast iron aircooled kits are very cheap so you might aswell buy new.

An aftermarket crank isent needed with a sport 70 setup, the stock should be strong enough. I would only reccomend the gearup if your gonna be driving at higher speeds for long distances everyday.

Here's just a bit of advice.

    Buy a:

    70cc Gilardoni cilinder AC aluminum
(its the originel brand for the Runner 180) Really high Quality. Will cost 77,50 pounds

    17,5mm carb Dell'Orto 52 pounds

Gearkit Malossi (14/39 will be fine) about 60 pounds.

Not to light with your vario roller, between 5,0 and 6,5 will be fine. And a suitable exhaust, as an originel fast model.

This will get you up to approximately 60/65 mph, not too much revs about 8500rpm. You can get a lot mileage with this combination.

    Good luck with it.
