hows it going, been lurking the forum for a couple weeks, anyway i got a 99 x8r for next to nothing and dad insured it for christmas, so ive been riding around for about 3 weeks now(got the insurance early) and downhill i can get the speedo to 50mph or so, just wondering how i should tune this bike,

ive had a mechanic check it over and its a good bike, bar the shocks, I dont know about the conditition of the belt or rollers so theylll be changed soon enough.

so im looking to get a bit more speed from this now (maybe 65 mph)

i was thinking of simply doing a carb/exhaust/70cc upgrade on it but im totally noob to tuning so help would be much appreciated

do yourself a favor and leave it alone, honda X8s are notorious for dodgy electrics and lack of reliability.

i would stick to it as it is OR shoehorn a piaggio lump into it.

Mate, also got an X8R and they CAN be reliable. Have a look at my setup in my signature for an idea what you can get part wise for the bike. Check out scooter attack first for some parts for the bike, and if you got any problems with runnin the bike you can give me a PM ;).

Thats the first thing youve ever said that I disagree VERY strongly with.....

Notorious for lack of reliability?? are you MAD :msn1: They will easily go to 15k+ miles without needing to go near the engine (other than belts rollers an shit...)
Infact my 70cc X8R was on around 11k when I sold it as bits, still ran fine but wanted a bigger bike.

Dodgy electrics? in the year I had mine, and the years my mates have had theirs (we all got same bike :emb: didnt realise at time it wasnt easily tunable) I dont think iv seen one electrical problem, the worst thing that happened to any of them was a snapped speedo cable ;) there made of win. Infact one mate still has his 3 years after he bought it(dole boy  ) and has had feck all problems in that whole time, I dread to think what milage its on these days.....

As for tuning them its harder than most bikes so I wont go into detail again im sure I have a couple of times already so have a deep look through the forum ;)

To get it to do 65 (on the speedo) you WILL need a gear-up kit and polini variator, along with pipe/carb/70kit. unless you go balls out with a seriously high revving 70kit.

    Agree with Purple here,

We`ve had no problems with reliabililty and mild road tuning with them (one we did has racked up the miles as a daily commuter with no issues and running an open filter which we sometimes shy away from for a road/everyday tune).

Suggest a Malossi cast iron kit as we have had problems with the Polini piston actually catching the cases at the bottom of the stroke and had to machine the piston skirt on a few occassions.
Gear up kit is a must.
    Std reed blocks are crap.
Cheap gear up if you`ve got the "X" (12" wheels) is to fit the "S" 13" rear wheel :D
