Hiya, something is jammed in my ignition barrel. I couldn't get the key in at first, now I can but the key only turns part way. I've got the barrel off the bike. I'm broke though, so there's going to be no replacement for a while. So I got thinking in terms of "what can I soak this thing in that might dissolve what's inside without damaging the barrel itself". (Obvs don't know what's in there but still, could be worth a punt). What metal are these things typically made of? Do we think bleach will damage it? Any other suggestions? I have a can of compressed air but there's nowhere in the back I can really squirt it in. Cheers
I don't know if you can get a thin paperclip (as thin as you can get) and poke around in there, to see if you can loosen whatever maybe inside. Did it jam suddenly or was it an on-going problem that has got worse? You could try WD-40 or a similar spray lubricant but if it's something solid rather than a worn barrel, it may not be effective. Does your key look very worn at all?
It was sudden. Made me think someone stuck something in there overnight, but there was no scratches or other damage that would suggest attempted theft. I tried sticking a guitar string in there but you're just poking around, no real way to hook anything
I'm not sure a guitar string would do anything lol, I know, as I've replaced a set on my old Fender, but maybe a thin paperclip can get in there and if you wiggle it about, you might dislodge something, if there is anything trapped inside the barrel.
