ok i mate has a yamaha cygnus things going well even tho it got 50000 on clock on a gilera runner 4 stoke as i got some miles to cover how long do runner lumps last 4
honda sh good bikes, good engine and quite nippy too. cygnus are also good but smaller in size. honda dylon are also good, same engine as the sh and @ runners are ok but probs not as good as the others mentioned, and it will probs get thiefed for the pannels and lights
what sort of speeds does he do everyday must be quite a bit for a 125 4 stroke to clock up that mileage like anything if looked after a 4 stroke will last forever. i agree with the bit about the theiving though
he says the bikes maxs out at 83 which i was not to sure on but he defo does 70 everywhere lol i just need something more reliable to ride i thought a 200 runner but would be botherd about lil shits and my panels lol
the newer runner 200 is alot smoother. quicker has better electrics as well but at the end of the day it looks crap compared to the old ones
4T runner hands down! They will last a very long time, unfortunally the crank bearings are not replacable once worn, but you can still get new crank cases. Old shapes are much prefured as the old shape runners are deemed to become collectors items, specially the 2 strokes. The new shape runners are beautiful, if your not a hardcore runner fan then the facelift model aint a bad thing, I think they look stunning. Just a shame they dont do bodykit accessories like the old shape runners! As monty said, newer bikes run smoother and better elecs. Also the old runners have a problem when you ride over the white lines on the road, they kinda go wobbley sometimes..
A yamaha cygnus won't do a genuine 70mph i'll tell you that for nothing never mind 83mph Personally i'd look for a yamaha majesty they're well built, pokey, handsome, roomy and can be brought on pretty much any budget. The Sh is nice to be fair but the big wheels take up storage space, my current ride the Suzuki Epicuro is a nice bike but pretty hard to find and are getting on a bit. I'd rather have a japanese 4 stroke (ignoring the fact yammys are french) as they seem to wear their years better
In standard form you dont really need to worry about main bearings unless - you run it out of oil - oil pump chain snaps now thats just usual maintenence so they should be fine. a few of the older engines had a problem with the stator side of the crank snapping due to the crank and stator not being dead central and over time they snap. even then the bearings will still be fine
you REALLY do think they go forever ay..... a 4t is an engine just like any other, the bearing shells/end of crank DO wear, even if there regularly serviced, as do rings, they do last well if mantained, but they dont last forever and are INCREDIBLY expensive to fix once there fucked. this is usually above 60,000 miles tho. even car engines need new shels at around 100k , new rings.. valve guides (list go's on) and thats devided by 4 cylinders so a quarter of the work... old runners ARE NOT collecctors items nor will they ever be. for somthing to be a collectors item it takes people to spend more than somthings worth, making it a collectable.. i cant honestly see anyone paying more than they were new for a runner... EVER.. there a theft collectors item. if your going old shape 4t runner just make sure its fairly low mialage, there all getting a bit old/tured now and its rare to find a nice 4t runner these days let alone a stocker 2 stroke. it will be stolen for the forks and pannels.. thats runner owners for you (thieving cunts/know thieving cunts) so avoid them... better off with somthing like a skipper (same engine, nobody would nick one) or a new shape.. wouldent sudgest anything other than piaggio built (gilera is owned by piaggio, a runner IS a piaggio.. blah blah) on a side note, guessing somthing is gonna be a collectors item is silly.. especially because its sort after (cossie's were the runners of the 80's) there NOT collectable nor regarded as a "collectors item" you will NOT see somone EVER pay over 20 grand for a stock cossie... NEVER.. they were close to 30k new.. same as the runner.. you NEED some of them to survive to become collectable, then the avarage sale p[rice needs to be ABOVE its original sale price for it to be considderd a "collectors item" basicly runners will be stolen and burnt out of existance... if anyone cdoes manage to keep one past the rest, there will be SOME thieving little cunt who remembers them and gets it however he can.. thats how runner owners opperate. they see somthing somone else has and want it, with no dosh, so they take it... infact thats 99% of the scoot scene right there and the reason im over it.. nothing but skint messers and thiev's these day's... anyone who does actually build a nice one, with cash they earnt, fron new bits will NEVER ride the thing as you normally would.. i could go on all day.. but nah, dont get an old shape runner... might aswell leave a grand in an envelope outside your house.
Why wouldn't you suggest anything other than a piaggio built item? I'm running around on an 11 year old suzuki which is wearing it's years very well engine is good despite not having a service for a while, and theres plenty of other people around that will say the same for other japanese bikes. While i'd still have a piggy x8 125 over any other bike on a provisional licence i still think thats a bit one sided to say you wouldn't sugggest anything else especially as your opinions are well regarded on this forum
im talking about my runner. from my experience of a 50000 mile version to be honest whos going to do that sort of mileage without rebuilding it or buying a new bike anyway. my runner never needed new rings and its still running now that i know of. who expects anymore from a 125 is an idiot there doing millions of revs all the time. its amazing they last that long i have seen some right shitters in my time they run fine but look fucked. piaggio build quality isnt too bad but most of them are only plastic panels. shit seized forks and rusty exhausts just like any other scooter out there
seen a few 2 strokes wiht 50k on an engine... i wouldent sudgest anything else as anything else is a motorcycle manufactor nocking out cheap scooters... the honda lead was the best selling bike of 2006/7 (regardless what tag recon'd) and is supposedly the best commuter transport about. the REASON i wont advise anything is i dont use my scooter like a 40 year old man, i CHOOSE to ride a GOOD scooter, not because i cant afford a car/to run a big bike, but because i choose to, so the fact the thing is stolen just because its a piaggio/gilera dont come into my line of thought, im not one to leave my bike sitting about cheers. why would i advise somthing i wouldent buy myself? i wouldent advise a runner 4t tb h, heavy/horid in corners.. much better off wiht a skipper 4t or if you want boring, reliable, non flashy 4t transport go and buy yourself reliant robin... can drive on a provisional and l plates (if the reverse gear is disengaged) as a 3 wheel motorcycle and it has a roof/heater/4 seats... or just stop fucking about, get a nice scooter and buy a car
no offence scooters are designed for cheap transport and for people to get from a - b after the war. just because manufacturers have diersified into 4 stroke scooters that perform well meet regulations and do millions of miles to a fiver. doesnt mean your poor 2 strokes are good scooters. Just means the world has moved on leaving people like you behind. so everyone at 16 or 17 with a zip 50 4 stroke or boatian is an old man just because they want transport. i dont think so runners cant be too bad. theres loads around and there one of the best 4 stroke scooters about, so what if they handle crap. its like moaning you have brought a commuter bike such as a honda cg and it handles like a pushbike. people just do not care. you seriousely think about things. think about it the world has moved on. the rules are post a comment relative to the question. what does 2 strokes are better have to do with the topic 'which 4 stroke to get' he didnt ask for your opinions on why he should buy something else he wants peoples opinions on 4 strokes on the market whatever anyone says the only purpose for scooters is to get around and that includes commuting
this is where your understanding of engines comes into play... 4 stroke engines are ARCHAIC OLD technoilogey... literally, old ass simple technologey the 2 stroke origianlly replaced, untill material improvment's/costs and the sheer mantenance of such a simple engine brought 4t's into the lime light. a truely revoloutionary thing would to fit a ONE stroke engine to a scooter... the ONLY enigne on the planet to achieve a 101% efficencey (yes, it is possible, you just dont understand how the percentage works) but ye. 4t's are used as they cost more to make, giving the company the excuse to charge more for them.. it has fuck all to do with reliability. 4t's are just as unreliable once you start fucking wiht them. a 2t scoot LEFT ALONE will suite its perpous just fine. if you were to leave a brand new gilera runner 2t alone completly bar mantenance it would still be alive and kicking today, at an END running cost of alot less... but once again monty's got us all arguing over the whole 4t 2t debate.. as once again he has somhow misconstrud what were talking about as a plight on the good name of 4t's by 2t's... maybe its freudian (meaning you really do love 2t's and hate the fact you cant mantain one yourself like all 2t owners do) and this has left you with a disliking for every 2 stroke bike out there... ask yourself this. how many 4t runners would there be if you didnt have thievs about AND they still made 2t's.... not many. now ask yourself this.. have you ever seen a 4t scooter win at anything in professional competition wiht 2t's? answers no m8. so anyway.. without further moaning from any side. this thread is about a 4t scooter, wich one to get, for commuting, in wich case buy a skipper wc 125.... wont get nicked, lighter than a runner so bette ron fuel, more comfy to some people, cheaper to buy and they have the same engine. sorted
They dont do a water cooled skipper 125 4 stroke. All 2 strokes i have had have been fine never broke down but then i never tuned them or starting pissing about with boost bottles pm pipes or porting to make them unreliable. I was just getting the topic back on track. your argument a good scooter is one used at the weekend when the sole purpose was transport for the masses. Then you carry on doing 200 miles a year. I did 25000 miles on my old runner. i loved every single mile . i even made a profit on it in the end. oh well i dont know sense i suppose
