i have the choice of either carb to use on my engine (172,cases flowed/matched to barrel, exhaust stub matched to a srt stub on a scorp,180 vario with 13.5s,srt fly, polini belt, green clutch springs, blue polini contra spring, malossi reed block, running pre-mix) but do not know which would be the best and easiest to set up. i know i will have to drill either carb to fit an air feed. if anyone has used or is using any of these on their runner with a kit on could they please give me their views and a rough idea on jetting, needle, atomiser etc. i am unsure as my mate has a box of carbs and there are 2 of the 26's and one has an oil pipe with oil pump attached so unsure if the 26 with this has an air feed as of yet. i only had a couple of minutes to have a scan in the box but there are even a few mikunis in there, but i have heard these are a bit harder to set up. i am hoping someone like minor or any of the tdr lads or someone who has or have used any of these carbs with a bit of sense wil give me some sound advice. many thanks for reading the thread any way and i look forward to reading any replys. gully. p.s. i was running a koso carb until some f**ker knicked it last week, alive and getting a kicking if i find out who
surely someone out there must have a bit of sound advice on these two carbs and the best to use. i just dont want that splutter/flat spot on take off that i hear and have read on the site that the 28 gives. i have looked through 52 pages on the search engine on the site after writing in 28 dellorto and then 26 dellorto. i can only see the 26 dellorto mentioned twice on the whole 52 pages. surely someone must have tried one of them out
i know im not minor. but...im running a rs 28mm atm, drilled out.. 108 main moved the needle clip and mixture screw and everything else is the same as it was when i got it, it runs suprisingly well no spluttering or anything.. better that the 25mm i was running before.
any carb with the wrong needle and stupidly large pilot will splutter on takeoff... id personally go wiht the 28.. its the same carb afterall wiht a bigger bore. its only the stock off the shelf dell needle you get when you buy a new one (from anyone but dell obviously as they will put any combi you want in it if you buy direct) 26 will be just as much "hassel" as the 28, its just a case of getting the pilot and needle right, then the mainjet is easy. the only downside to a larger carb (in any case) is part throttle fueling, the bigger the bore the wider the throttle is open (compaird to stock) at any increment, so 3/4 throttle will be the same diameter as full throttle was wiht the smaller carb, meaning its gonna rev more at lower throttle openings.. so you roller it heavier to drop the revs out (aslong as its not going crazy low rpm at full throttle) or just keep richening it at part throttle (thinner needle/lift the needle up) hence its best to have a thinner needle.. this basicly means your wasting alot of fuel. but thats just big caqrbs on scoots go for the 28
thanks minor , my mate vowns a bike shop and i never thought to ask him if he had any carbs kicking about , well he took me down into the cellar where he has 3 large boxes/crates of single carb units and just from looking on the top of the boxes i found 2 28's and the 26. there maybe a 25 in there yet but thought if not i would find out what also to get when i grab a carb (any carb £20 for future reference if you need help mate, plus post of £5). i will rummage and see wat else is in there and if no 25's go with the 28, but i will take apart any dellortos to see if any smaller pilot jets or thinner needle and grab an L bend for the throttle cable and a flip up choke. i got a mix of weights of rollers so thats no worry. many thanks mate, your a wizard. with what i have learnt off the two replies i am more confident to go and throw the 28 on an get it set up right, i keep on at my mate to get a dyno as he does mot's and know he would make his money back, its a big place an he has bikes for sell etc
