Which airbox other than stock is best? Lets put noisy open filters aside.
    BGM?
    TNT?

OR the best engineered gilera runner airbox?

i havent personally tested them, so i cant comment on if the top 2 air boxes actually flow any better than the std airbox...but wax made a neat underseat airbox install on his polini evo Aerox out of the tnt air box, and i run an underseat airbox off a 100cc kart :)

well the thing is it aint pretty to be honest, but its hidden under the seat, so its not on show...

but it performs really well, much better than any filter ive tried before, its got 2 venturi tubes inside it, which accelerate the air flow going through the airbox, which gives storming low to mid range grunt....and its soooo quiet, makes a ring a ding a ding noise pmsl

they do a bigger box for 125cc karts too, but i think they are designed for rotary induction, on reed valve engines you want the intakes offset so you get wave reflection going through the box...helps the reeds react faster and also helps get the fresh charge into the engine, which is why you lose loads of mid range torque with an open filter :)

sorry no pictures at the moment...

I should be ordering the TNT one to try. I wan to see yours and compare how to link it up with the carb and cut helmet bay. i know if the tubing is too long, it wont be that effective.

i dont channel any air to the box, i have cut the bottom of my helmet bay out, so theres plenty of air circulating around for the air box to breathe...

the air will be cooler in that location anyway than a std airbox, as the std air box is bolted directly onto the engine, which gets pretty hot...

you can feed cooler air to the box if you like, it might make a tiny difference in the summer, but this isnt a very hot country anyway, we get a few weeks of warmish weather, the rest of the 9 months of the year is bleeding freezing lol

ahh yes sorry m8 just noticed your location: Asia

in this country most scooters are fitted with heated carbs, to help them warm up quicker on cold mornings, and to help prevent carb icing, im not sure if scooters for the Asian market are fitted with them, but thats one thing that deinitely needs disconnecting before you worry about feeding colder air to the airbox ;)

i actually run without a heated carb all year round in Britain, ive never had a problem really, even in the depths of winter...

those fitted with delorto carbs do have them but normally we take them out. now the bike really run well. much better in low-mid then those open filter runners 180cc. :yahoo:

run a stock box or a completly free flowing filter. theres not really any point wiht middle ground. you ether want a reliable easy going mile muncher you can ride in any weather or somthing you pin everywhere. let how you use the bike decide what filter to run. airbox type filters are a waste of time.

well im gonna disagree...ive raced all the aerox's with open filters around coventry and ive beat them running a kart air box...my runner is heavier than an aerox and at 14 stone im a lot heavier than the riders...

unless youve tried a kart airbox....not really worth commenting ;)

i think thats got more to do with the fact most aerox's are poorly tunned.... dont think its specificly down to your filter.

a kart box IS an encased open filter.. it works like an airbox (by shielding it from the elements) BUT is completly free flowing. just like crossers, this is the best option for a wet weather full throttle bike, but again, an airbox is there to keep fuel usage and engine wear down while not killing off too much power. i run airbox's 90% of the time, lets face it, if you have a monster your gonna rag it everywhere so run a filter, if however you wanna build it, do massive mialage and not fuck about wiht it (ie keep it as usable as a stock bike but give it a lil bit more) then keep the airtbox. mildly tunned bikes are there to be used, not fucked about with monthly,. a commuter should go a year without needing any work doing

The main reason karts have to be fitted with an air box (by the rules now) is to decrease sound to meet noise restriction requirements at many tracks...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQfCuLCNw74&feature=related

as long as you pick an air box that will flow the required amount of air, there should be no loss in top end performance over an open filter....but gains everywhere else.

often an open filter will give gains over a stock scooter air box, but often scooter air boxes arent designed with performance in mind, quite often they are there to help restrict performance to meet the 30 mph moped laws, or are designed more with manufacturing costs or looks in mind :)

going back to the aerox's, they were pretty quick, infact as i stood at the side of the road watching them bomb around, i was getting second thoughts about racing them, and wondered if i should somehow try and find an excuse and go home

as it turned out i neednt have worried, my attention to detail had paid off and i had the quicker bike :yahoo: there were a few aerox owners questioning me about my set up afterwards

i even beat crossie on his supposedly 77mph RS50....was funny seeing him flat on the tank in top gear trying to catch me going down a hill, i was just sat upright in front...casual as you like ;)

anyway enough trumpet blowing from me...
