I'm looking at getting my wheels powdercoated on the SR as the paint around the rims is beginning to flake :(

I know I should remove and replace the wheel bearings to do this, so was wondering if any of you have done this before? and could give me tips on what to do to get the bearings off? Also are these the only parts I will have to replace?

I take it the front has 2 x bearings(either side) to remove, but don't think the rear rim has any to remove? can anyone confirm this?
And last but not least.... where's the best and cheapest place to get replacement bearings from?

    Thanks for your help ;)

rear wheel has no bearings as it is fixed to the output shaft, otherwise you wouldnt go anywhere!

there are two bearings in the front wheel like you said, seals pop out easily and then its just a case of knocking the bearings out, put a screwdriver in so that it sits in the middle section of the inside of the wheel and lever it up or down so that you move the middle spacer, this will allow you to get to the bearing with a screwdriver just to pop it out, then flip the wheel round and do the same.

im looking for someone to replace the bearings, if you have the dimensions any bearing shop should have them for you, seals however are slightly different.

    Slightly more professional approach:

Use a hot air gun around the wheel hub but not directly at the bearing, sit the wheel on its side on two blocks of wood to protect the hub and rim. Swift's approach to spacer is the only way, so then using a punch and hammer, tap the bearings out (don't just hit one side move the punch around hitting at 1/4 intervals) bag the old ones up and take them to your local bearing and seal shop. Cue bearing man to identify and provide new ones.

Place the new bearings in the freezer for 30 mins, use some emery to clean the facings of the wheel of dirt, then warm the hub up with a hot air gun. Then take bearings out of the freezer and just drop them in (might need to press them in with your thumb a bit if people have bodged in the past).

Its worth buying the top bearings you can afford as less resistance allows more speed, especially seeing as the wheel turns a hell of a lot more than your standard bike wheel, its just something that scooter owners tend to overlook...

    Good luck Di!

Cheers for the info Steff ;)

I've been having a look on easyparts for the bearings and seals....works out nearly as much as getting the bloody wheel powdercoated :wtf:

...don't suppose you know the dimensions of the bearings then? :(

 ahhh thanks tweak..will have a go and let you know how I get on ;)

yeah thats quite common on some autos...I had to replace the rear axle bearing on my Runner 18 months a go!!!

The bearing is situated in the gearbox...and requires the whole gearbox to be taken out!!

I paid £10 for original piaggio bearings and something silly like £5 for fitting. It just seemed easier to me. ;)
