right im at uni in september and get quite abit of money so was thinking of selling my dna 125 and my slider project and getting either a 05 gsxr 600 or a yamaha r6 but don't know how much these big bikes cost to maintain and tax and what have you so any reccomendations would be helpfull.

Hey mate, student loan ftw, getting many grants?

First year I bought a laptop and about 5 books. Didn't use any of the books, just online journals and stuff, anything can be found online although it is good to reference from textbooks but if you're good at google scholar then don't worry about buying them too much, all depends how much work you want to do.

You done your test then? Maintaining them ain't bad, although the things you would normally change on a scoot is very cheap.

    I.e. scooter belt = £20?? - big bike chain and sprockets = £100-£150

Then oil and filter changes etc, shouldn't be a problem.

    I got my CBR 600 ('91) at 19.

i get about £2,500 a year on grants and like £2,500 a year on loans my course fee's are like £2,000 and im trying to get a part time job so should be well easy to get everything paid for, also don't have to worry about accommodation mum's sorting me out until i leave uni not passed my bike test but i've passed the theory was gonna wait until september to decide whether to take it and get a bike

are you looking at a r6 of the same year? if so go with the gsxr its a better road bike by far. the r6 looks dated as its barely changed since it 1st came out.

you can find out how much tax is online.
insurances depends on so many different things its impossible to say.

like jefro said. all the consumables will cost a lot more then a ped.

    tyres £200+
    oil...
    chain...
    sprocket...

it aint as cheap but boy is it worth it

if were on to 600 talk lets ignor the girls bikes (r1 and gsxr) and remember the best handeling bike ever created, the cbr600rr (not the 600f) amazing bikes, even the old ones are fucking sick little toys... chavs ride gsxr's, women ride r6's. riders ride an rr (again, ask anyone who has owned a 600rr if they ever had a better handeling bike)

to be honest it all depends what year bike your after. (imo)

2003 : go with the ninja. it was ahead of its time by far. it had a slipper clutch when (correct me if im wrong) none of its class did, and not even the thou's did.
upside down forks, love it or hate it digital tachco, 636 engine with class leading mid range etc.

2004 : id say the gsxr. its not the fastest or most powerfull. but its probably the best road bike out of the pack that year.

2005 : id say ninja again. it was the only new 600 out that year so has the advantage of being a step ahead of its rivals in development and tech.

2006 : daytona... its british!, 675cc triple sounds like unlubricated bum fun (in a good way), it looks (so) good, sweet handling etc.

2007 : cbr rr. its tiny, very very light, chuckable, looks good, good torque for a 599cc, good seating position, etc.

i agree with minor that the cbr is a very good bike. but till the 07 model its chassis was its trump card. the engine lacks mid range. it didnt get upside down forks till... 05, and they cost alot!! honda's hold their value like whoa.

r6 : is the bike for "man dem in the ends still" (its the only super bike most of them know for some reason, i blame grime :p  "1,2,3,4 5,5,6,6 how you going to catch me when im on my r6 ,6")

gsxr : at one stage was the hooligans choices.
now they seem to make quite bland bikes that are good at everything but dont excell at anything and lack character

the ninja : has the extra 36cc till 07. so its got the power advantage, people complain about the suspension being to hard for the road (expecally the 03 rear shock and the fact we live in pot hole britain).

you could always get a 750 gsxr (or mv augsta f4 750 ), or a duke 749 or somethig too.

im still loving the 90's rr's!!! do lack a little mid, but a decent manifold sorts this.. i love honda's tho, no secret.. good quality and backup, better than any manufactor.

but ye, thas me, the 6's are mostly down to preferance.. looks like a bit of oyu? get one, dont like it, dont get one.. there all fast enough to kill yourself on wiht the greatest of ease

I think it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast then have to ride a fast bike slow all the time, if you get the slider dialed in sweet I think it would be more fun .IMO.

is that your reason for riding a 50 then? :p ;) lol kidding.

i think a 600 -750 sports bike (higher if its a twin) is the most you need for the road.

a thou is just madness ...... which is why i want one!!

Bro had a cbr 600 rr and used it 12 months a year, all weather, was a great bike, good to flick about, now he's got the r6 he prefers it as he can throw it about more and it's quicker, but he does miss the rr.
