How 'stable' are these conversions, are there any flaws? I'm 95% nearly there in starting to do one, seeing as I'm getting some sweet deals. I just wanted to know if there was anything that I should look out for, etc? I know about the fan, etc, just anything else? flaws, merits?
only other thing to pay attention to is the stud length, the ac head is taller so the studs wont reach the top, they just sit flush and theres no way of bolting it down, you can wind these out enough to get a nut on there or replace them wiht ac length studs.. other than that and tapping the flywheel for the fan theres nothing different, just change the cdi and plug the engine into the loom.
i done one recently on bova's bike. yes the studs have to be replaced, but the main thing i found is the space between the 2 lower studs is too small for the bore to slide over/onto nicely. studs holes on the malossi bore are 8.5 mm as they come, had to drill/bore them out to 9mm for a perfect fit. and i just changed the fly/magneto to a ac one, works a treat as i left the lc ignition system in place wich is also a benefit. and yeah , lc fly wheels don't come ready tapped for fans.
well, unless you know a way of winding a nut onto a bolt INSIDE a hole then no...so you have to wind them out to get some more length on them. otherwise its just a case of piaggio/malossi variables... ive had kits that sit tight on engines, but never had to open out stud holes.. few LIGHT taps wiht a soft hammer and they usually drop into place. was it just the htreaded portion at the bottom you had trouble wiht mick? or the entire stud?
entire studs (bottom 2) i did try a few taps with a rubber mallet but it still did not go low enough (about 1.5 inch off being flush) but like i said, drilled out the stud holes by 0.5 mm and it slid on and off perfectly. innitially i thought the studs were bent, but when i fitted brand new ac ones , it clearly wasn't the case so out came the drill , 10 mins later we had a perfect fit and i wouldn't bother winding out the studs, just replace them with correct parts, would't want to mess about with one of the most important and expensive parts of the engine for the saik of a tenner(just me though)
