I've put a 125cc typhoon engine in my Vespa ET4 and it's turned into one of those things I wish I never started. Maybe some of you here can help... The engine runs and rides fine but the battery isn't charging which means I have no lights! I used a typhoon loom, CDI & reg. Any ideas?
Stator coils behind the flywheel. You might want to go back and check the wiring from them. Could just be a simple plug connection fault, or the rectifier is shot on one side, not converting the AC voltage to DC for the battery charging.
Thanks mate, I suspected the stator too but it will start without the battery so I was unsure if that was proof it is working. If I'm going to change the stator I may as well upgrade to a runner one?
Do the electrical tests first, it may not be the stator, could be the rectifier. The starting circuit is different from the charging circuit so it will start.
The only checks I can think of making are the two yellow wires that connect to the loom. From stator to regulator. They're sound and I've swapped them around which makes zero difference. I wish I could find out if it should make a difference as they were severed when I bought it.
I have diagrams in my Haynes manual. I've ordered a regulator, I'll try that first as it's easy. Re the stator upgrade, am I right in thinking I need a Malossi CDI to change over to Gilera Runner because the factory ones come with immobilisers? I think I need: Runner stator & flywheel Malossi CDI Runner coil
There is another after market cdi available now, about half the cost of the malossi one that does the same job.
Actually I've been told I don't need it as the two stroke CDI isn't coded after all. Thanks all the same.
