Bought myself a 200cc 4 Stroke Runner last week.

Back end had a rumble that seemed to be the outer bearing in the case. So the plan was to get it sorted..but not this soon.
Doing about 40 the other night, it stopped.

Starter would not turn it over...so trailered it home. The pics will show you why it stopped, someone had stolen the drive belt and replaced it with a pile of rubber and string!

Missing cooling fin on half the variator too.

I also note that it appears to be an original Gilera outer half of the variator..so one half poling, the other half is Gilera..is this normal?

Was not going to touch the variator or rollers, but since it was apart, thought it worth while. It has been fitted with a Polini D3 30 deg variation in the past and I see that there are noticeable wear marks on the ramps..and some flat spots on some of the rollers, that appear to be about 11 or 12 gram measuring on a set of digital scales.

So to replace the variator...go with a new one the same ? or do I have a better option ?

Before I order a new Polini do I have other better options..or is it pretty irrelevant?

Rollers get flat over time due to them being thrown out against the fixed half pulley .

yes its common to see the fixed half pully being stock and the variator being an upgrade, when you but a polini or a mallosi yopu only get the rear variator half, you use your stock front fixed half or you fork out and purchase a upgrade fixed half ( if polini/mallosi sell one for your scoot)

the missing fin will cause an inbalance on the crank shaft over time, ie one area of the fixed half is lighter than the rest so it induces a wobble at high speed rotation.

keep the variator just replace the fixed half pulley disc , replace the old rollers with new and grab a kevlar belt , jobs a goodun and should last you another 10,000km

    OK, thanks
found the replacement outer pulley, not seen a different type. £25..bargin !

There are wear patches on the old variator, looks like the chrome surface has been worn through in parts. Did not get picture of that

Best I could do to check the weights of the rollers was to check on a set of digital scales that are not really designed for such small weight. A single 6 gram roller off of an Aerox weighs in at 4 gram and theses rollers i have weigh in at 10 gram..so they must be in the 12 gram area I guess, possibly a bit more

check aj sutton website , they should have stock rollers so you can then find out what the oem weights are then grab some else where ( oem rollers will cost more than say from a ped shop )

Damn, thanks though..just ordered 6 roller variator and rollers and outer from PM Tuning..though the outer part is the same price , or a little cheaper from PMT that AJ.
AJ does not have any rollers in stock at moment, but they show 6 rollers weighing in at 165 grams to 27 gram per roller..but neither has them in stock. so just went for the complete unit..gets it back on the road.

    I have a box of new rollers for a Yam Aerox 50. a pack of 6 each of 6g 6.5g and 7g.

By using a balance scale I compared the weight of the 6 old rollers with a selection of the new know rollers.

The set of 6 old rollers cam in at 84 grams give or take half a gram.
So that puts the original rollers in at about 14 grams each.
