Is it worth getting a variator on a standard DNA 50. Do they make a difference to top end or acceleration? My mates SR used to be really bad acceleration (wrong rollers) with a variator but once he hit the right rev range it would take off but with the standard one on the acceleration is better but its stops at about 50. Is this because there is more travel on a performance variator if you know what I mean. Which should I get for my DNA, Malossi or Polini? and do I keep the same weight rollers that are in my standard bike? Thanks
is your engine standard? no point getting a variator if everything else is standard i dont think! save u and buy a 70 kit.
Yes engine is completely standard except for de-restricted. I don't really want to get a 70 kit or an exhaust as I want to keep it reliable. If it wont make any difference at all I wont bother but its just that my mates SR over revved (like when the variator reaches its maximum and engine starts to rev higher instead) alot later than it does with the standard one. His bike had a technigas exhaust and with standard variator our bike are completely equal except downhill where mine is quicker.
i have fitted one to a dna a while ago it was a malossi variator and it also had a technigas exhaust it improved the acsell but if you dont have the variator lying around i wouldnt bother just save the money for a 70 kit.
Money is not really an issue as I just have a fair bit burning a hole but that is in the bank for my test and a bigger bike. I don't really want to change the bike engine wise as a few weeks back I realised what its like with a broken bike (electrical) and it wasn't nice. Did it make any difference when you fitted it? Also does anyone know the standard weight rollers?
look, everyone thinks a 70 will be less reliable.. an iron kit (with correctly set transmission and carb) will be more reliable than the overly poorly cast stock item, will be double the power too. your pipe gave you around 1bhp max.. the kit will give you 4 usually..
It may be more reliable but in 6 weeks time I should be on a 400. I don't want to make it harder to sell on in a few weeks either. My bike just feels asif its got more left if it had longer gearing so it stays in the powerband. It shoots up to 45 then starts over revving and if its windy or uphill slightly it will not go any faster.
try a gear up then... not many have proved me wrong. any gain you get will be a loss somwhere else with gears..try slightly heavier rollers and see if it gets you any more top without loosing revs..
My bike seemed to be playing up this morning. Normally revs to 7,500rpm at full throttle at low speed but today it was only going to 7 and once I got to 45 it would go abit quicker as the revs rised. This afternoon it was fine though. If it will make a difference and make it more reliable (gearing wise) then I will buy one
Every now and then my bike stops revving to where the power is meaning it struggles to get to 40 but when it does it hits the powerband and is back to normal. I think its the variator getting lazy. Should I take it apart and clean it out or put some new rollers in or just get a performance variator?
