The best way I've found is a rattle gun, don't use it to tighten the nut up!

its a standard thread, loosens anticlockwise. nip it back up with a torque wrench

Me personally use a MASSIVE Flat head screwdriver to wedge into the teeth on the variator and undo it with a socket bar. However for tightening i still use the screwdriver but i use a torque wrench to the correct setting otherwise it will come off while your driving :L

but to do that you need to be able to lock the crank

OP, for what they cost and the amount of times you'll need the crank locking it may pay to buy the proper item or if you're handy, make one from a section of metal bar

Some folk use piston stoppers...which can easily be made from old spark plugs (hole drilled down the centre and tapped out to suit a bolt) but some folk dont recommend them being used. Personally I haven't used one so cant say they're either good or bad

Personally i Would not use a piston stopper as there is always a chance it could damage the piston and no you dont understand what i mean. The Scredriver that is wedged onto the variator and inbetween my legs and the stand locks it into place then i tighten it :p

The only chance of a piston stopper damaging the piston is if the pin at the end were to go through the top of the piston when pressure is applied to rotate the crank.
If the cranks turned slowly by hand until the crown contacts the stopper and then pressure applied evenly there should be no problems...afterall the top of the piston is strong enough to endure an explosion every time the crank rotates and mixture fires...1000 times at 1000RPM. The larger the diameter of the pin the better as it spreads the loads over a wider surface area.

but then there's always a chance that the teeth could break off the sides of the variator or break the side out the casing where the end of the drivers wedged

    you takes your chance...............

Here's a few of my home made holding/ undoing tools, they might not look pretty but they work pretty damn good!

Why would you want to carry a £5 tool under your seat? Once you have fitted the variator correctly it's done, does the the £5 tool take the transmission cover off, tighten the variator nut up correctly at the side of the road on cold rainy night?

the simple way would be to buy the propper locking tool but if you want it done asap then sometimes you can get away with using a rag/hand towel to lock up the variator pulley, get a ratchet, twist up the rag to fit behind the pulley turn the pulley until it jams up and bobs your uncle.. doesnt work an all pulleys tho. if all else fails buy a 12v impact wrench from any diecent car shop there not too powerfull so you wont risk snapping off the crank nut thread. if your variator has never been removed then you might need a powerfull impact/wrench or locking tool
