Hi guys, putting the engine back together after a bit of crankcase welding, stud removal/replacement etc, now need to time the valves to the TDC marks but they are far from clear. Please see the attached image, am I correct in thinking that the corroded/worn mark I've boxed on the flywheel is the arrow and the vague embossing of the casing I've boxed is the TDC mark? If not I'd really appreciate if someone could tell me where they are?! Piston appears to be at TDC with these aligned but it could easily be a tooth out either way... I'm also a little bemused by the spacers etc that surround the cam sprocket, think I've got them right but if there is a reliable Internet resource which includes this info I'd really appreciate a link. The online parts catalogue at AJ sutton shows everything except the camshaft and sprocket assembly! The online manual at scribd has no useful info or images. Thanks in advance, this is a 3 year old bike that's done 8K miles - I can't believe what a mess it's in! (I bought it like that). Cheers RobH
Ok, think I've identified the casing mark, slightly to the right of where I had marked in the pic but I now have another problem. The manual at scribd shows an automatic valve lifter on the camshaft end with spring and a retaining dish, I don't have these, only two thick washers with an off centre hole to locate them on the camshaft, I'm assuming the larger one goes behind the sprocket (pulley) and the smaller is installed after the sprocket. The next question is am I missing some parts or are some late model heads (2012) just built this way? I've looked at various fiches but the camshaft and sprocket assembly is not shown - not much help! Hoping for inspiration. Cheers RobH
Have you got the solid one piece cam? The valve lifter cam is usualy in the 180-200 engines. put a photo up of what you have.
Thanks for the reply MARSH. I'm not sure what spec the cam is, it's the first one of these engines I've ever looked at. Attached a couple of pics. I did wonder if the automatic lifter was related to the kickstart models, might need a little extra help to start when turning the engine over manually...Mine is electric only. Further to my previous post, I've come to the conclusion both thick washers should both be positioned on the outside of the cam sprocket, placing one behind the sprocket puts the cam chain out of line with its tensioner. There is also a very thin shim washer behind the sprocket, covering the large oval(ish) slot where the auto lifter would presumably be, I'm guessing this is to fine tune the alignment of the cam chain? Cheers RobH
That look's ok to me, just make sure the t.d.c make and 2v are lined up before you fit the chain adjuster.
