Hey, I was wondering before I tear apart my CVT tomorrow what could be causing a squeal.

When I reach top speed or near enough top speed, I get a very high pitch 'squeal' come from the CVT (I'm 90% sure).

Where should I look for the problem? Could it be the CVT Oil? I was going to replace that first.

I haven't really noticed bad performance it's just irritating me!

    Thanks guys :)

The only oil is in the gearbox it is not anything to do with the cvt. Only way that would be making a noise is if it was low on oil which is unlikely.

Could be something without lube like the tube the variator sits on but that's also quite unlikely. Check the belt is the right with to not need replacing.

Will do thanks for that! So what is the oil for then? I thought it was to lubricate the pulleys moving in and out?

My father told me to add a small amount of grease to the sides of the belt... would that help?

Would be cool to know so I can buy materials on the way home from work tomorrow :)

wouldnt grease the belt mate, could end up with it slipping all the way home, wont be too much fun tbh ;)

Only on the sides where it touches the pulleys... I dont understand where its coming from! Perhaps I should check the seal on the cvt perhaps its trapped air?

take the variator out and give it a wipe down on the face if you think it may be that. how long has the belt been in the bike for? if its been changed recently it will need 'wearing in' and may make a rubbing kind of noise whilst it is bedding in

Does it do it when you first start the bike too ? Nothing like being a geek lol.

It's been in there since June last year...

& Nope not when I first start it. Only when I'm going around 40MPH+ It sounds like a turbo in a car haha!

I dont think ive ever seen a lubed variator o_O. Probably the dumbest question ever but could you give any advice on doing this?

It's just the slider it sits on that sits on the crank. Generally the coating should do the lubing in a way but due to things being warn or just pure randomness it can help and fix squealing.

Don't ever put any grease near the belt.

The gear oil is for the gears which are in the casing near the rear wheel. They take the drive from the rear pully and convert it into the rear wheel. It's just a fixed ratio as the cvt does what you would say would be gear changes. It's actually a very clever system and very well performing. It was developed and banned from f1 before it even got to see a race. :(
