on my crank where the variator bolts on, the thread has been stripped, is it possible to have a new thread put on it? or will it fuck up? yes i know im a cheapskate but im jobless an spending money on 70 kit
is the whole thing stripped? how did you manage that? if its just a section you may be able to rethread it if its te whole thing i think its new crank time tbh. you probably could find somewhere to cut a new thread if its the whole thing but i reckon that could cause problems later on (whole thread section snapping ect)
yeah its just half way on then one it gets tight it just spins off again lol ill try get it rethreaded then
is it the nut or is it the threads you could get it re tapped but probs make it a little small and so use a smaller nut
To do it properly it's best to take the crank out as this way you have full access to it. However still fairly easy to do when in the cases, i suggest you take it to a garage as it can be a pain in the arse to do. ( sometimes i'd rather pay someone to do things like this)
if the point along the thread is stripped, you can dress it up all you want, once you torque up, and the thread in the nut stretches the same thread, it will let go. If it is possible, as on many peds you will lose your kick start by doing this, put a very thick washer in front, so the nut now will tighten on different threads, the first three threads of a nut, bear the pressure of about 80% of the loading. Even if the washer is the same diameter as the nut, you might find the kick start pinion fails to engage on the kick start dog on the outer pully/fan, depends on the ped. It has been proved that a nut that has 6 threads, is as strong as having an infinite amount of threads on a nut, if there was a seventh thread, there is no loading between nut thread and bolt thread, what so ever. obviously it is a " bodge," to get saving for a new crank, don't forget the loctite.
ohhh dear well im getting the shop to retap a thread onto it tomorrow maby, also my bike is just a big bodge so itll add to everything else, basically built with zipties lol
it may well be okay, depends how severe the damage is. A shop will have a large selection of dies, which means as said, they might choose to come down in size, and give you another nut to use.
