If a fans gone then it's as simple as opening it up and replacing the fan.

The problem is getting a new fan and how much of a cunt it is to open. Plus if it's got a warranty doing it yourself will void it.

Ok I’m a It tech, basically it could be

9 times out of ten the fan collects dust over its time and prevent the fan from spinning and then the processor get to hot and to protect the mechanise it automatically shuts down . You can you and Hoover on the fan to remove dust but I use an air compressor.

If the fan or the heat sink is faulty den if you buy the new fan or heat sink witch ever is the problem then I can fit it for you for a small drink.as i replace every think on laptop every day wont take ore dan a couple ov hours .

whats the laptops make and model number

The other, more unlikely problem is the input socket, i.e where the fan plugs into the motherboard, being faulty.

compressed air? a couple hours? behave

it takes 20 mins to strip any laptop (even a toughbook) fan is fairly simple to fix. gewt yourself to a computer fair/online and find a cheap replacment fan (never contact the manufactor, they dont make the replacment fans they send you) then if your not confident in fitting it take it to a TRUSTED laptop repair centre/a friend you trust.. you have some comback then, especioally when somone blows compressed air all round your board/under the heatsink where it frys your processor..... computers should never see more air than the fans that supply them, hoovering is one idea, altho this carries static aso unless you earth the hoover pipe itself you could agaion fry the processor. ether way, dust hitting plastic at high velocity creates static. static is 50,000 odd volts (but no amps hence you dont die) and can kill a componant instantly. so basicly you avoid creating static and earth everything you can (even yourself via a bracelet and a plug) aswell as your table and everything else you intend on putting anywhere near the open computer.

This is not to lead to an argument just stating couple things
20 mins lol yes only if the fan is under a cover a bottom (hence y I asked him what model it is ) ,I do at least 5 to 7 laptop repairs a week for the last 2 years , let alone I work on Mac’s which is a whole different ball game and currently doing tranning in bga reflowing using rework stations, it not just strip it you need to label were certain size screws go you need to be careful not just rip it apart and put back you some time need to take pic as every laptop is different and yet a old laptop is easy to take apart a lot ov new ones are more compact yet need more careful work and the heat sink/fan I normally one ov the last things out ,id said 2 hours to accommodate .labeling, photoing and not rushing things take the upmost care ,and all work is done on a anti static matt and anti static writ band and gloves .
I’ve never used a Hoover just a trick ive heard about but yes It can cause static ,we use a air cleaner compressor or air in a can the air compressor is under 50 psi so no damage the one we have was made and sold to clean pc’s and laptops so no damage or static is cased . My bro own the company and ive used the compressor for last 2 years and he used it for like 5 never 1 problem. Plus that’s only when laptop is whole and u only put in were the fan holes are hence blows the fan round and let’s dust out.
This is my profession so please don’t try make me look like I don’t know what I’m talking about .I was just offering veiw on a cheapest way to fix it as he’s a fellow SS member and asked for advise no need to try make me look like a random guy dats chating shit.
By the way as minor stated forget the vacum buy this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=45631&C=SO&U=strat15
Clean it then test it then you will know for sure.
