try a local bike shop or engineers and see if they can put an insert in, shouldnt be too costly and will save you buying a new kit.

Hi. Whats needed is a helicoil insert as yellasei says, this is what they are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicoil
Any good local engineering firm or local garage should be able to supply and fit one for you cheap enough. Its easy enough diy if you have the tools and are careful. Any motorfactors should sell them as a kit form with a load of inserts a fitting tool and drill bit.

You must get the right size kit for the thread your repairing not sure as to what size is on your cylinder but it should be metric, for example if you needed to fit an M6 stud you would buy the M6 kit.
Another cheaper way to fix it would be to drill and tap the hole to the next size up and fit a bigger stud or bolt, if there's enough metal to do so.

Hi I just checked the stud on my engine which is the same as yours and its a M6 so you would need an M6 kit. The diameter of my stud is 5.9 mm.

Take the bore off and have someone experienced do it, have to agree, not a beginers jobby(not rocket science either though), small mistakes such as drilling a pissed hole or snapping a drill bit inside , drilling too deep could prove a major pain in the ass, if you do decide to diy then remove the cylinder and take your time doing it.

How about liquid metal the hole then drill and tap to size?

have done helicoils myself and they are easy to do aslong as your careful and take your time
retaping it to the next size isnt really a great way as arent the holes on the exhaust just the right size for the m6 stud

Glad you got it sorted, sounded like your local bike shop were having a laugh trying to sting you for a new barrel when all that was needed was a cheap insert.
