hi guys. i am attempting to fit an alarm on my sons bike. the instructions are telling me to connect a wire to the input wire on the start relay. i have attached an image below is this my start relay and if so what wire would be the input wire, bike is a 2006 gilera dna if the info is needed, thanks for any help
It's one of the thin black wires. One is live and comes from the start button, the other is an earth. The problem is that you don't know which is which. Have you got a spare 12v bulb that you can put between one of the wires and earth it, then press the starter and see if it lights up? Only one of the black wires will light the bulb and that's the 12v switched live feed that switches the relay and that one comes down from the starter button. Even a Christmas tree bulb would do for a quick test if you have no other bulbs.
ok great so that is the starter relay then, i will have to look for the a bulb what can i earth the bulb to? thank for the help as i thought it would be 1 of the red wires lol
One side to the black wire terminal, the other touching some clean metal on the frame, such as that bolt head that is handily placed near the relay. You will need some help to operate the start button while you hold the bulb in place. What the thin black wires do is energise a coil inside it, that pulls the relay contacts on, just like an electromagnet. The large contacts and thick red wires take a high current 12v feed to the starter motor and one of the wires goes directly to the battery + terminal so it's always live.
OK, so if the fuse blew, that has to be the live wire. If it was the other thin black wire, that one is already earthed and the fuse wouldn't have blown by connecting earth to earth.
Great! Sorry about the fuse, but I am glad you got there in the end. Is the alarm one that remote starts the bike?
