Not my own experience but going by other comments the best vario for the 172/180 is the MHR vario...

While on the subject of sr172's, im using my stock carb for a while until i get funds for a 25/28mm..
When i drive to over 50 clock speed and shut the throttle off to slow down then get back on it, theres a slight boggin between quarter throttle...pull the throttle half or more and its ok..
Any one know how to cure this?
bigger pilot jet? slide notch? thanks..idles fine when cold but when its warm cuts out at lights :( lol

Not to confuse you, but PM says the Polini or 180 original variators are the best???
I can not prove this as I have not compare any of them.

pm can blow me.. the 180 is good for a cheap mod, the polini is good when used with a torque driver but dyno comparesen shows the multivar has the best curve.. polini is similar altho it has a nasty flat spot up to 15mph hence it needs torque correction
