Very enjoyable read, just gone from start to finish. Thanks for sharing and can't wait to see it finished!
Get the weekend to work on my own stuff for a change. Neighbours done the decals: Changed the seat cover, foam was good underneath, no rot or dusting: Cleaned the downpipes and box: VHT blacked them: The cover for the rear box is currently in primer ready to go nice and blue. Calipers and brakes are all done and back on the bike, bled and working nice, might be able to paint the tank tomorrow
Tanks now down to bare metal, best place to be as well. Surprisingly, I didn't find any nasty dents to deal with, bit of topping up to do around the rear fixing area, nothing that a bit of chemical metal won't cure. Still got to clean up the underside. I'm going to have the tank support sections off and fit some new captive bolts behind there, I seem to remember that 2 of the threads are stripped. Ok, now the underside is done as well. Doesn't appear to have any pin holes anywhere although there is obviously some pitting here and there. But good enough for a 26 year old metal bike tank. Wash down with some thinners and a tack rag and into primer me thinks.................... tumtetumtetum 1st coat Ooh, that kinda stands out a bit
Yikes, 4 months since an update on this. So, been stupid busy with the new transport operation and not had much time to play with the toys. I finally managed to get all the panels painted and on, except one which I had to re-paint (put the wrong activator in the paint and it all cracked) Fresh fuel in yesterday, got the old girl to fire up, first time in 12 months, and wouldn't you know it......the fuel pump is leaking like a sieve. Still have to do the chain and sprockets, adjust the tension and stuff, few other small things, check all the bolts to make sure they are tight and I haven't missed anything, then test the brakes and suspension. The new Renthal bars seem a lot narrower than the old set so I'll see how I get on with those, might order a wider set, we'll see. Thoughts are turning to the dash board, maybe a clocks upgrade, or maybe I'll just change the surround for something different.
Its very errrm Blue... I mean im sure its nice, if your a smurf... Hahaa im being mean. Probably just the angle, with some decals and those white yamaha stripes it will look good.
Yeah, it is................ I did think it might be a bit too much yesterday when I looked at it, but like you say, get the decals on to break it up some. I might chuck it outside later to see how it looks in natural light. The original was all blue, just not this deep blue.
So, it started life as this, a rather tatty, unloved thing, rough running, bad braking, petrol leaking, potential to go anywhere bike : Now, after putting it outside, it is still rather blue, but not so bad. Ordered a new screen and mirrors, should be here before the MOT next weekend.
Bike went through the MOT, taxed, insured. Didn't like the sound of it when going to the mot station, so decided to have a little play again. I had up-jetted the carbs and fitted road going pod filters instead of the standard airbox, made it a lot more responsive but when it hit 5000rpm it struggled to pull any. Thought it might be a bit lean so I pulled the choke just a bit and it made all the difference to the running, went properly again. So thought I would put it back to standard while waiting for the bigger jets to arrive. Think I can find the standard jets anywhere????? No! Turned the garage upside down, not a carrot. So the solution I came up with was to wrap 3/4 of the pod filters with insulation tape to restrict the airflow. Works an absolute treat! Goes like the clappers. Might even leave it like that for the duration, see what happens.
