The thought was there, thanks though, that was a very considerate offer.

UPDATE - I have again checked the float and needle when the float bowl is off and everything works fine. I can get fuel through the inlet with the float down and it stops it when raised. Put is back together still no fuel entering bowl. Opened again and removed needle, reassembled and the engine started. It only died when the float bowl was flooded and started coming out the overflow. Put needle back in and tried to capture some fuel in the float bowl and reassembling and kept some in again and reassembled carb. Engine started again but died and I assume emptied the float bowl of what little fuel was in.
I am at a loss at what to do with the float / needle problem other than replace the whole carb.

Right, now it seems we are getting somewhere.
Could it be that you have the wrong bowl for that carb????
Or maybe the float is too big for that bowl?????
Because when you re-assemble it, it sounds like it's holding the float up.

    Try this:-

I reckon the float height is wrong. Bend the tab down slightly to lower the needle a bit and try it again.

You could be right but it doesn't make sense as it worked before but got to be worth a shot!

You may have inadvertently bent the tab without realising and it's the only thing that stops fuel getting into the carb.

The float bowl works just like a toilet cistern in principle, if that helps you visualise how it works.

I have bent the part that retained the needle and tested it by blowing through the inlet and lifted the float until I can't blow. Reassembled the carb and tested it again and I can blow through the inlet, turned it upside down and can't blow. Put it back on scooter and it has started and run. I will put it all back together tomorrow and take it for a test ride. Fingers crossed...

Yay! We just might have a result here!! :D

You just have to remember these mantras:-

    1. Every 'No' is one step closer to a 'Yes'.
    2. Never give up... and never surrender.

Thanks for your help guys, I have been very impressed with your help and advice. I use several vehicle forums and this is very welcoming and helpful.

I will update tomorrow evening on the scooter ride...

I tried her again after work and she started. Wasn't able to take a ride at that point so turned her off and put her back together in preparation for the evening scoot test.

I returned to her about 30 minutes ago and the old girl started. Took her for a ride and initially I thought there was no difference band was thinking I should adjust the a/f mixture but then I carried on and much to my pleasure she got up to 30 on a flat and was happy to stay there. I even managed close to 40 on a very slight decline.
I may still adjust the a/f at some point but there is no rush for that.

Next I may consider a new drive belt and rollers...
