Running rich issue - not jets

I have had an ongoing power issue with my ludix 50cc a/c scooter. Ran beautifully when first fired up then was cutting and chugging when I slowed for junctions. This is a fuel or firing issue not rollers. After a few posts on here I have changed the plug, the auto choke and the cdi. I have cleaned out the carb and it's running on the standard .56jet on derestricted basic exhaust - so not running rich, or so I thought. Really had major issues today, fires and flies for 30secs then dies, feels like fuel starvation. Leave ten mins and fires flies and dies again. I figure either rich and flooding or stuck carb float and starving? So I limped home took out plug and it's black as coal?! This was replaced just 1week ago. What would cause this richness if not jets. It's a basic gurtner carb, no mods. I did add a little redex to the fuel! Apparently it's not a bad thing but now I wonder? So, redex, reedvalve or dodgy piston is all I can think of. Any help would be appreciated. I am thinking its time for a bigger engine.

check how many turns out the air mix screw is. Should be 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 turns out from fully in.
It sounds like when the choke is on, it runs great, but when the choke comes off, it dies. So, choke on, runs richer (less air, more fuel) when it comes off more air, less fuel runs too weak.
The plug issue could have been caused by the redex. Give it a could clean and see what happens afterwards.

The air mix is only adjustable with a special tool, this carb has idle screw only. Idling low. It would be annoying if it is the choke as I just bought a new one, but I'll check the wires and connections. How can I test the choke? I,ll empty the fuel tank and put fresh fuel through it, replace the fuel line, clean the carb again and see what happens. I assume the only reason a carb would run rich is jets or choke? Do you know what carb could be a direct replacement for a gurtner py12? To fit a ludix 50cc. Could be time to get a more reliable carb?

measure the size of the carb mouth where it goes into the manifold, find one the right size, choose dellorto, buy, fit, away you go.
But can you guarantee that changing the carb will correct the problem?

No that's true, but it will certainly eliminate one line of enquiry. I'll clean everything up and try again.
