Greetings from Finland! First of all, I found this site few days ago and since then, I've been busy and filled with new information (yes, I have read BOTH workshop AND tuning sections so far). However, even after I tried search I didn't find topic with information about Gilera Runners forks. Now, this brings me to my problem: I just bought reasonably priced used runner, with few flaws. First of them is a major one: forks really don't love life - which is why I wonder if one can service them or are they replace only? Yes, I know I can get new pair for about 160 euros and I'm guessing at some point I do need a new set, but before that I'd like to puff some life to those things I'm hanging on right now. If one can service them and you know the size of the seals, GREAT! I also need to know the amount of fork oil they need. It's 50cc SP model from the year 2001, with Sabco forks. Thanks, Mii
Can you not get them from a piaggio dealer? My dad rebuilt mine with new fork oil and seals or am I off the track here? Can you not get the springs (if needed) from a piaggio dealer because it didn't seem hard for him to do :wtf:
you can do them, but by the time they wear out the seals the stantions are fubar'd.. so the cost outweighs that of new forks. unless the stantions are somhow fine when the forks are fooked enuff for you to notice. if its regular mantenance then yes but if there gone just buy new and you can forget em for a year
So they can be serviced? If so, indeed this sounds good news to me and my ped. At this moment I don't know if I need new springs, but guess I'm going to give a call to the Gilera dealer. I just need to find one from Finland and I'm afraid, here the original seals are going to be rather expensive compared the ones you can get just by measures (car partshops sell them). Wonder if any german scooter shop sells them..?
mabey so, if the stantions are atall marked/rubbed/scratched tho give up an buy new. lets hope you caught it in time
This is too true too. It's just that I did Yamahas shocks a little time ago, which is why I'm keen to fiddle around with these too - seems stupid to waste money on something, you can fix. Guess it all comes down to the condition of the forks, which I'll be seeing in few days as I open them.
Easyparts, of course! Seems springs aren't really the expensive part, but "important" parts do cumulate into big money. If fixing costs even half the new set, there's no way I'm going to touch'em even with a stick. Like Minor Confusion said, it's just too much work. Now I just need to find dealer from Finland that's not to keen for money, not to mention hope the shocks aren't too far gone. I have to admit though, more I think about it, more I like the option of having new and shiny forks. Or maybe I find used set that's not so bad (unlikely - they do have tendency of wearing out, don't they). Thanks!
hi there, i'm new in the forum and i need some advice about the same model of runner which i own, it seems that my problem is simillar to this topic so i didn't opened a new one. i will describe the situation here the best i can, because i'm not sure myself if the problem is at the front suspension. so as i said before i drive a gillera runner sp 50cc model 2002 (if i'm not mistaken here, it's the last before the new gillera runner) and since here in greece we are kind of underdeveloped (the roads are just death's farming area) and the bad roads are just a daily routine to me. as a result my scooter is getting a hard time and especially the suspensions. so i noticed recently that the feedback i get from the steering is just not right, something is different and feels like it grips more when i do cut turns to the left than to do on the right where it feels a little more easyhandling. i also noticed that the tire is looking like it is toutching the road more on the right but since i'm not sure about the right amount of air i need to add in the tube i'm not sure if this is part of the problem (can someone tell me the right amount? i have the original tubes i think, or where can i read the amount on the tire) so far i come to a conclusion that the left (front) suspension is not working as good as the right (front) one , and today i notices also that there is some dirt around like it's leaking oil from somewhere. do you also think the same? can this be fixed on service or i have to replace it? (or worst do i have to replace both the suspensions to make sure?) thanks , yours digitaly, nick.
hi nick, first fings first tyres presure should be; front - 23psi (1.8 bar) rear - 29psi (2.0 bar) going from your description of the bike sitting higher to one side than the other, a hard ride and leaking oil seals. they could well be bent and the seals are leaking so will require a strip down service and rebuild. check for play in your steering column bearings (tighten the bars if need be) and inspect them for a broken cage missing ball bearings etc, also put your bike on the stand with the front wheel raised and check for play in the front wheel bearing. lets us know your findings ste
I'm off to my hometown for x-mas holidays now, once i will return to athens i will check it out and tell you about it thanks for the advices so far
happy new year to everyone! so after i returned from my xmas vocations i went to a piaggio center here in athens and together with the mechanic we found that the real problem was at the steering bearing ball tracks, so he replaced the bearing ball (i'm not sure about the name, in greek we call the bearing balls "rouleman" so maybe i call it wrong) and the leaking at the suspension tube wasn't anything big, just a little cleaning was all it needed. now everything is fine.
