You must be doing something wrong to do that, if you do need a better quality crank then buy new not second hand. Top racing or malossi!

I have just been replacing them with spare cranks my mate had at his house. coupled with the fact that i might pop the odd wheelie, think that could be the problem. Will have a look and see what i can find, thanks.

sounds more like dodgy cranks or poor fitting, my bikes on a stock crank and lifts up most the time. so far so good on the crank after 1000 miles on the 172

Every time I have fitted the cranks they have been running smooth with no problems then an almighty bang and a rattle and then it would be sheared off on the variator side, I read this can be common on the 180's. With this crank all seemed well in till I noticed a metally scraping sound and noticed the pulley seemed to be touching the transmission casing in one small spot. on rotating the crank i notice that it seemed to look warped/buckled slightly, the pulley was tight and the next time I started it, it buggered my outer pulley.

I had recently tried out a 25mm carb to which I was very impressed with the performance/throttle response improvement but as the bike is used for a 26 mile round trip for work 5 days a week, decided to put back to standard. Whilst the carb was on, it was lifting better than it ever had and being a big kid at heart could not fight the urge to wheelie every time I pulled the throttle back! I think after this short stint with the 25mm carb I noticed the noise from the transmission cover.

Being that I have only ever fitted old cranks out of runners that have been stripped I think I may have to fork out for a decent crank to prevent this from happening in the future.
