Hey guys, I'm looking to put a 172 kit on my Runner early next year. I was wanting to try & keep it pretty standard - not after ridiculous speeds just want that 172 wheelie power. I'll be running the Malossi 172 kit - however I was going to try & just keep as many bits as possible standard. Will it run alright with standard parts? Mates told me to buy the crank bearings which I was going to do anyway, been told to not necessarily do the bearings straight away but have them ready. Are there any things you would say to definitely change? As I say just wanting something that I'm not piling stupid money into - just want that grunt Any & all comments welcome, cheers guys. :good:
172 kit and 25 mm carb..will be quite a bit of stress on a standard crank though how many miles has that crank done already
changing the main bearings/crank seals/water pump makes good sense as these are service parts and require changing periodically anyway. its all very well saying have a set of bearings ready, but ive seen a main bearing break up and scrap the top end of an engine... and yes you could fit a 172 kit with the std exhaust and carb etc, and still get a healthy increase in power :good:
Cheers for the replies guys. Crank has done around 11,000 miles but after speaking to quite a few people they've all said that the cranks are pretty strong in them and unless going the whole hog it's not needed to change the crank. I think I'll look into getting all those bits Dave & do them all at once. Even if it's within a month or so of fitting the 172 kit, I think I'd be able to get away with it?
do it all in one. otherwise youll just spend more money on gaskets etc! on the mileage not. according to my clocks its over 20000k and ive still go the 172 going strong and smooth as fuck. although its a different engine i cant be sure
Point taken, I think it's gonna be all done at once. Decided to be sensible for a change, get rid of debts & then do the 172. If the engine seems sound, you know what's been done to it & you know how it's been run the mileage is irrelevant unless you're selling Cheers for the reply Kyle :good:
If the standard crank and bearings have done anymore than 15,000miles then replace them before fitting the 172kit. You may aswell go for a BGM aftermarket crank with some nice quality bearings & seals. Then you wont need to worry so much with the 172 kit being too harsh on the bottom end. On a newish/low mileage engine a 172 will bolt on and go for many trouble free miles. Even with a standard carb!
