I've mentioned this a few times in various threads so thought to share it a bit more as i've restarted the project recently Bought from ebay salvage dealer as a stolen recovered for £225 in February 2007 looking like it does in the pics below. Within hours of getting it home and finding it wouldnt start with a fresh battery and fuel it was swiftly converted to a pile of spares. The frame was stripped totally and given a repaint, the wheels were stripped by my son, rims polished and the centres repainted white. New bearings were fitted all round The front and rear suspension was totally rebuilt and the top yolk refurbed yolk from this to this Bodywork was repaired as necessary and primed ready for the base coat. The rolling chassis was reassembled and thats when things stopped (approx 4 years ago). The frame went to my parents out the way and panels went in the loft on the garage. Due to loads of building work at home I didnt have the time to do anything else with the bike at that time. I then stripped the engine and sent the barrel off to be resleeved, this took months as If you know Fahron Racing you'll also know Ron dont rush himself. When I eventually got it back 2 years ago it just got stored until this last winter. Being a bit bored one night after i'd finished the Zip SP rebuild to sell, I dragged out the RG engine and started to clean things up. I stuck alot of bits in the blast cabinet too and painted up many of the brackets etc ready for paint. I stripped and rebuilt the clocks as the surround housing had been broken at some point. Then approx a month back after the KX125 had been reassembled, i fetched the rolling chassis home Being as the weather was nice a few weeks back I started to paint up some of the parts that had been blasted previously. Neighbours wondered what the hell was going on with all these bits of metal hanging from the washing line (best time to paint when its warm and dry as the paint spreads well) Last weekend I started adding bits to the frame to see if anything was missing or needing attention The wiring loom was toast I bought another damaged spare so Sunday made one good loom from the 2 bad ones. All joints were checked, breaks resoldered and heat shrunk and all original fittings reinstated as they should be. I've now installed the loom on the bike and started to connect things up. next is to sort the switch gear and install it loads left to do...i'll keep you updated
A few other bits I forgot to mention... The original can wasnt the right one so i managed to buy a carbon MIC end can from ebay. When it arrived it had a great hole in the rear so i contacted the seller with pictures and got my money back...only fit for scrap....not in this house it aint! I sourced a new outer sleeve from PJ engineering and resleeved it...now looks like a new one! I then cut the front pipe and derestricted it before rewelding, blasing off the rust and giving it all a nice coat of heat proof satin black paint. Both brakes were then stripped and rebuilt with new seals.
My fave of the geared 225s. Get the feeling you'll make a mint compared to what you paid when it's done too
Wiring loom now fitted with a few other bits. Some items are dry fitted to see if everythings there and lines up. Rear suspension has yet to come out and engine fitted now its done. Intend to place lump at side of frame, connect all wiring and power up system to check its all working right before I commit to the full install.Brakes are just placed on loose as i've got stainless hoses to fit
You can still occasionally pick one of these up relitively cheap on ebay but grab it as soon as, Won't stay that way for f.sure!!!, Still stunned by how much £50 jobbies I used to get over 25 yrs ago are going for now!!. .
dumped the lump at the side of the frame and connected this up. Hooked up a battery jump pack and turned the key....nothing So... started pressing a few buttons, first headlight pass button...light flashed! woo hoo, thats a start! So turned on lights, both high and low beam work (forgot to look at the rear ) Brake light switches aren't on the bike yet so no hope of them working!. Side light dont work so will check the bulb first Next, indicators ...all work as they should. None of the idiot lights work on the dash so thats have to come apart again, firstly to check the bulbs and then the wires. The speedo and rev counter both light up but again it looks like the bulbs gone in the temp gauge. Horn works too Next, just a very small press of the starter...just enough to move the crank...check Only a single wire remains that until tonight I dint know what it was....looks to be the neutral light. So hopefully what I connect it all up again I may even have some more idiot lights working on the dash...we'll see Meanwhile, i'm waiting for some new gloves for the blast cabinet as the rubbers perrished causing it not to pick up very well and i've a few small pieces that need cleaning up and painting before I can fit the engine back in the frame. They're easier to fit while the lumps on the bench! Thats it now til the weekend as we've already got plans that dont include me having garage time Really looking forward to the thing being a runner now
Sounds to me someones gonna be well deserving of much patting on the back in future!, Man,that looks like your having a ball!. .
bit of an update but not alot. EXUP needed work so is in bits...subsequently RGs been put on hold for a while. plus I needed a few bits that were missing so have had to wait til they were sourced (got them now tho') Managed to drop the engine in the frame, bolt it up and make a few spacers in stainless just before I went on hols last week. Now i'm back I have to sort the EXUP wiring first and will then take some more pics of the RG and progress a bit more. need some bolts for the brake discs next
