Afternoon all, hope you are all enjoying the easter bank holidays.

Now, on to my question about reed valves. Im not going to ask what they do etc.

But ive discovered my carbon reeds are now not in very good condition, they have daylight running through them.

These are the malossi ones, and worked very well on my aerox engine and setup, just my main concern, is for reliability.

Will going back to steel reeds affect anything else, or shall i just purchase them along with a new top end as currently this one had a soft siezure at around 35mph.

    Hope to hear your advice,

    Slidertom.

i like carbon reeds, if that happened with steel ones the cylinder would need replacing, sometimes ive seen them take out the crank bearings too....

This all seems a bit odd to me, have a look at the pictures.

Judging the combustiom chamber, it looks to me as the head gasket went too ? Ive been looking at the images myself.

Also would this explain the banging or popping sounds i heard before it siezed ?

looks like its got too hot to me, see the way the scoring is near the studs? you see that in bikes that get ridden hard before the warm up, often is on all 4 studs, called a 4 point score, happens of the coolant mix is wrong too which looks like yours is, judging by the rust, but also looks like the reeds did some of the damage.....

But this happened on my commute to work not long after rebuilding it, i ragged the life out the old kit what was on it, suspect stage 6, then i got it rebuilt.

Was like around a week to a week and a half after. And i ensured it was all setup correctly, and the coolant was on a summer mix, so it had a tadu more water in than usual, and its sat through winter until this day. Unless the rust occured from day dot like you say, because it may well have been incorrect.

if the head gasket went it would have blasted coolant out your header tank and smoked white smoke.

Exactly as to why im puzzled about it also. Obviously im no two stroke king and wont claim to be, but i know what i know, and this seems all a bit odd, like it had correct everything, premix, coolant, slight upjet, the lot.

Oh well, fingers crossed all stuff comes monday, i'll have a day with it and bolt it all back up.

And when i allowed it to cool i noticed white smoke pouring out the exhaust, but at the time of morning it was, my mind was all over the place, being 0400hrs and commuting to work, you dont expect it.

Ah i see, good man ! I only do this as it was part of my upbringing.

I just enjoy anything with an engine. And have my fair amount of knowledge in my head from studying and working for a few years as a mechanic.

Still, we are forever learning :)
