I temporarily rent a raptor 125 and as of today it has just completely stopped ticking over.
I was in mid ride, it backfired and just died.
It has been backfiring quite a lot lately, at least 4 times on my way to work per day.

I do not have a clue what I'm looking for.
I have attached a picture of what I immediately spotted (pipe looks like it was glued in) I'm guessing its an airtight issue?
It had a strange smell coming from the bike when I pulled over.

Anyway check out the pictures, it could be something completely different. I guess that's why I'm asking you guys.

make sure that pipe is fitted back in and air tight other wise it will get too much air causing it to run lean and back fire. if the spark plugs white its running lean and the pipe will be the problem imo

does it need to be airtight then to start up? because its not ticking over what so ever.
I'm just renting this scooter at the moment, its my first bike. I have done about 200 miles on it that is it.
if it is just that pipe I will bodge it just to get it back to the garage. Thanks

Stick it back in the hole and use bathroom sealant or similar around the joint just to seal it. It's none permanent stuff so the garage can't moan about it.
Alternatively, phone the garage and tell them it's broke down and they should be able to collect it and bring you a replacement.
Saves you doing anything that might upset them.
It's a rental so if it breaks down it is their responsibility.

I don't have any sealant. I'm going to try and wrap the pipe on a slope with electrical/plumbers tape and then force it in the hole. I don't even care what they say. this is the third time I've had to take it in 200 miles. first it was the speedometer and then it was the wobbly exhaust! he actually changed the miles clock to one from another bike. who knows how many miles this bike has actually done. I know its been at least a year stood in the rain by the looks of it. I cant wait until I've got my own bike.

tell them it's now affecting your getting to work and back and that you want a replacement as this one cannot be trusted. If they don't then threaten them with an invoice for every day of work you lose because of it. And seeing as a days work could be £100..............you never know.

I think that is exactly what I am going to do stevep. It has effected me going to work on two occasions in 6 weeks. And now I've gotta use my day off messing about. Its surprising though because the bikes are pretty new reg. from 2010 upwards. I pay £60 a month to rent it, is that cheap?. then after 6 month they offer you the chance to buy it lol haha not even going to entertain that idea. soon as I have the money I'm getting my own. They say they are charity/ government funded, I would feel a bit tight giving them an invoice or threatening them. I just want a bike that works consistently. anybody got any recommendations for a reliable well priced bike? cbt legal.

They say they are charity/goverment funded?,
Feeling bit reticent 'bout hammering a nail in about getting
    a proper deal with them,
Might give you an idea roughly what type of operation they run
with how quickly they came out with that type of statement methinks, hummm?.
