Just double checking my logic... Gonna be fitting a new crank and bearings shortly, been supplied with malossi crank and bearings, the bearings despite being in malossi packaging are just SKF C3 bearings... .. but upon looking at them, they have one side with the race completely open, the other side has a brown coloured shield fitted.. which way round do you fit them? My logic would tell me to fit the completely open side towards the inside of the engine as thats were the lubrication will be coming from but want to be double sure first! Genuine piaggio bearings, even the more common cheapo ones theyve sourced from korea or china are the same both sides so ive not come across it before?
Personally i would be removing that shield to allow the oil to flow through the bearings as its supposed to Or maybe you are talking about the phenolic that supports the balls , its not actually a shield
x2 fitted fibre caged bearings before, the shields end up burnt and worn upon rebuild so if anything they create more heat skf c3 bearings are fine ive seen 'malossi' bearings as far as i was aware there c4 skf with malossi written on the side... ive herd c3's last longer anyway
yep yep.. leave the plastic in place and fit them with the writing to the crank (just be far away from them when heating the centre to install the crank) they are a pain and dont last as well as c3's simply down to the plastic.. hate em myself (altho ive had a set in the bike for 10 months now) if you remove the cage the bearings will all pool on one wside and die quite quickly.. think wax is thinking of dual cage bearings with the normal race cage in metal then 2 plastic caps on the side (just like most "closed" bearings)
Yeah I guess i am I normally just go to the bearing shop and buy the bearings across the counter. Im not one for buying Malossi bearings , i dont see the value
Yeah i wouldnt be that stupid to remove it, its whats holding the bearings in place  But i guess he was thinking about the bearing shields on normal bearings, which is fair enough. So do i fit these spanky plastic raced malossi bearings, or just go with a korean set of std ones with metal races....
depends how skillfull you feel wiht the heatgun and crank... doesent take much to melt one, saying thatr if you do it right it doesent need the heat on the bearing for long to get the crank in but ye, up to you entirely... just put the bearing in so the writing faces the crank.
