Has anyone got any pearls of wisdom on getting the large nut off the front pulley on a CVT transmission.
I`m getting to the point of thinking this job can only be done with an impact gun.
    Any ideas?

You've just answered your own question lol
Either an electric or air impact wrench does the job with no special tools required.
Apart from that if you have a strap wrench it might work in lieu of the correct tool.

Plenty of info on the internet about making a holding tool if you haven't got an impact wrench.
If you look at the variator fins there are usually a couple of holes or strengthened fins where the tool fits.
Basically it's just 2 pieces of steel strap one longer than the other in the shape of a "Y" with 3 bolts.
2 are fixed on the ends of the Y so that they project through and engage with the holes.
The other bolt acts as a pivot to allow the Y to adjust.
You need the "tail" of the Y to be long so that it will catch on the ground or some other part of the scooter.
It's also useful on the clutch.
Do a search for DIY variator holding tool http://battlescooter.proboards.com/thread/2663/variator-tool-valve-spring
