My ped is making a funny noise from the transmission but I cant hear it when i run it without transmission cover on (I know your not meant to do it).

When slowing down it makes a whining noise bit like a turbo spooling down even with cover off.(sort of)

    Thanks in advance.

does it make the noise when you are slowing down from high speeds?

i had this problem and i was told it was because i was at a high speed slowing down without the throttle on therefore it was the gears slowing the ped down and making the noise

yeh it makes the second noise when Im doing that but the other noise is only there with the transmission cover on.

And both noises have only just started recently.
one today and the other when I put it back on the road.

worn variator and ether a missing clutch spacer, worn imput shaft bearing or theres a part of your gearbox casing that has snapped off letting go of the imput shaft. dont ride this bike untill the problem is fixed

The roller ramp plate and the spacer were worn and then replaced so could that have left the marks?

And then caused the belt to wear unevenly, and thats whats making the noise or am I well off track?

    Thanks for all advice.

the belt looks as if its been stood in one position for a long time. the marks look as if they are from a flailing fibre from the belt. worth replacing. as minor said, don't ride it until you've sorted it.

Just ordered a polini kevlar one so hopefully have that next week and it should fix it, fingers crossed.

Just realised the belt on it at the moment has done about 7000 miles, how long do they normally last?

    not that much longer

but if you had this belt on when your last variator went pete tong it might have buckled the belt.

Yer thats what I was thinking because it wasn't making either noises until I had the new variator so hopefully thats the problem.

P.s. Are you the Jamie I was talking to on msn other week?

Well took it into the bike shop to change the belt....they then told me my crank was knackered....(300 miles old)...

they wanted £900 to fix it and even ordered parts without permission.

Then we spoke to the owner and he admitted that it was them that damaged there crank...so now there apprentice mechanic who fitted my variator (and damaged my crank) is going to get a serious bollocking on monday....

and they are going to get parts and fit them for £100 and will include a guarantee. :D

They wanted to charge £900 to buy and fit crankshaft and seals, and the charge about £70 labour an hour.
And they are accepting partial responsibility.
I'm pissed off but I just want to get my ped back on the road.
