I have (what i was told is) a 97 Piaggio Typhoon 50 that was shipped here (USA) by a commercial pilot that spent some years living in Spain. He opted to bring the scoot back with him. I was told that it was all stock. I removed the head to find an aluminium Pinasco head with an almost 49mm combustion chamber. The bore on the cylinder did in fact match with the same almost 49mm bore as measured with calipers. The cast iron bore is clean and nice and the compression is tight. This somewhat confused me seeing as most 70 kits are about a 47mm bore. Maybe my calipers are garbage, but either way its not a stock 50cc. I can find little to no information on Pinasco kits of this age range. I also know nothing about the Typhoon 80 and weather or not i may have that rare bird. Ive called a few Piaggio dealerships in the US only to have them tell me that they dont know how to decode a euro VIN number and they knew nothing about a Pinasco cylinder kit. It is a TECH1M engine and did have a Dellorto PHVA12 carb on it. The small carb makes me think it started life as a 50cc. This bike has been sitting unused for about 12-13 years and has only 2700km on the clock, and yes i do have new crank seals coming in the mail. I have many new parts to install but i really need to know a bit more about this cylinder kit so i can decide and move further.
The only fuel tank im aware of is under the seat next to the 2 stroke tank. Where exactly do you mean sir?
If it's a genuine 50cc it will only have the rear tank, if it's an 80cc it will have a petrol tank in the front nose panel. You'll need to remove headlight to see it.
Ok thank you. Ive just made it home from work so i will check now. I assume its the 50 but the cylinder size is throwing me off a bit. Ive found little to nothing online about a Pinasco cylinder for a 97 Typhoon. Be right back.
Ok theres no fuel tank behind the headlight. Seems silly but i just wanted to be sure. When it comes to the cylinder i guess well just see how she runs with a City 16 pipe and either a 19mm or 21mm carb. Havent ran this bike at all yet. Stock carb was beyond cleaning, exhaust half was missing, and the gears were stripped. Still debating on weather or not to go with another Delorto or to try my first Polini CP carb. I have 5mm jets from 80-122 for delorto but the CP has sparked my interest. I have a full Malossi overrange kit new and installed and a Top Performance gear kit installed (11-39 primary, 16-47 secondary). Waiting on the Yasuni to show up and still trying to decide on which carb and which clutch and bell i want to use. Also have Vforce 3 reeds on the way as well. I have a brand new in the box Stage 6 sport pro mk2 but its a Minarelli kit. So hopefully the Pinasco kit plays well with the City 16 or ill be buying a Corsa 70 most likely. I've had many other 50cc scoots but this is my first Piaggio build so ill gladly listen to any advice or product recommendations.
Might find this interesting on the Pinasco kit, fitted to vespa's: https://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/...MIkPmvv6K55AIVAuDtCh16Iw-JEAQYASABEgLc9vD_BwE
Ok thank you. Ive seen similar explanations for a few other Pinasco kits as well. Im assuming they may all follow the same rev range trend of a low mid range power, but who knows. That would make the Yasuni City 16 a not so ideal match up it would seem. I hate to remove a good fresh 70 kit but ive grown accustomed to the peppy rev happy sports and midrace cylinders.
